H and L visas are the primary visa types issued by the US government for those looking to work in the United States on a temporary basis. While popular with U.S. and foreign businesses, the H and L visa process can also be complicated. Since the start of the COVID pandemic, this confusion has only grown with new U.S. Government visa policies. To provide some clarity to members, AmCham Shanghai is organizing a briefing on H and L visas by U.S. Consulate Officers at 3:00 to 4:00 pm on August 12 at AmCham Shanghai.

    Jonathan Mermis-Cava

    H/L Visa Coordinator and Fraud Prevention Manager at U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai

    Jonathan Mermis-Cava joined the State Department in 2009 and is currently the H/L Visa Coordinator and Fraud Prevention Manager at the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, China. He previously served as a political officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro and as the American Citizen Services Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia. Before joining the State Department, Jonathan was a university lecturer. He also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Suriname from 1995-98. Jonathan holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Davis.
