AmCham Shanghai's Food, Agriculture, & Beverage Committee invites you to join Trends, Insights and Challenges for the Bakery Industry in China on Thursday, January 16 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm at the AmCham Shanghai Conference Center.

China's appetite for bakery and coffee products continue to grow unabated, despite a market saturated with Asian brands and a continued upswing in foreign offerings. According to the China industry research institute, the retail value of the baked goods market in China was nearly 217 billion yuan in 2018, and in terms of per capita consumption, China's baking market has a great potential to double or even triple. With such a growing market, there comes mounting challenges, room for improvement and a multitude of opportunities.

Sam Gao will give an overview of the world frozen dough industry and China's nascent frozen dough industry, comment on some bakery players' strategies and performances, successes and failures.

Sam Gao
Co-founder of TopGuide Advisory Shanghai
Sam Gao is the owner of a boutique research advisory on the food industry, TopGuide Advisory Shanghai. He has authored or supervised the production of nearly 100 reports, however it was only one short six-page industry note while in Rabobank, on a mid-stream link of the bakery industry chain, frozen dough, that has created the most impact in the market. This short report played a decisive role in shaping TGA’s industry focus when he decided to launch his boutique consultancy in 2018.

Sam was a journalist in Xinhua News Agency in the 1990s, and an analyst with Euromonitor, Global Data, Mintel and Rabobank thereafter.

Sam is an active blogger on LinkedIn and Xueqiu (a Chinese social media platform for industry analysts and investors), an editorial consultant and guest writer for Ringier’s food industry magazine, a frequent speaker or panel moderator in food industry seminars and conferences, and often interviewed by the domestic and international media such as Financial Times.

Till Kundt
General Manager at Bakkavor China
Till Kundt is General Manager of Bakkavor China Bakery, serving major international coffee chains and e-commerce customers nation-wide. He has been working in China’s food industry since 2008. Experienced with market entry, setting up and management of food manufacturing facilities in China, he is familiar with China’s online and offline FMCG channels as well as food service. Till’s native country is Germany; he is fluent in Mandarin and has a degree in Chinese Business Studies.

An-Jen Suen
COO, Retail Division APAC at Groupe Le Duff
An-Jen Suen was born in Taiwan and moved to France at the age of 2 and grew up in Paris. After a Bachelor in Hotel & Restaurant Management, An-Jen worked in different luxury hotels in France and Taiwan as F&B Manager.

In 1997, he joined a French retailer, Carrefour in Taiwan to develop F&B concepts in the company hypermarkets. After leaving Carrefour in 2009, An-Jen held several executive positions in retail. In 2016, he joined Groupe Le Duff as the COO of Retail Division APAC. Groupe Le Duff is a privately-owned French company specializing in the French Café Bakery segment and other restaurant concepts. The industrial division BRIDOR specializes in frozen bread and Viennese Pastries (Viennoiserie). An-Jen has been based in Shanghai since 2006 and has been in Asia for nearly 25 years.
