As China's education sector burgeons, we see myriad expressions of 'education with Chinese characteristics' (中国特色教育主义). One media group, the Shanghai-based Sixth Tone, have proven themselves leaders in reporting on the multi-faceted education environment in China, and two of their seasoned journalist will join us on this day to discuss what they've been reporting on and their perspectives.


Rural educational resources, gaokao reform, the fast-growing wangban system of distance learning, 'smart' school uniforms and in-class cameras – our Sixth Tone guests will speak about these and other highly relevant topics, as well as offer some perspective on how Sixth Tone, who offer 'fresh voices from today's China' achieve what they do.     Dandan Ni

    Senior writer at Sixth Tone

    As senior writer at Sixth Tone, Ni Dandan has been writing with a particular focus on the health and education industries. Her major reports included “Class of 93: Inside China’s Supersized Schools”; “Testing Times: the Lifelong Cost of High Marks”; “Shortage of Critical Leukemia Drug Threatens Ill Children” (which won the SOPA Scoop Award in 2018), and “Outlaw Educators: China’s Growing Homeschooling Movement.”

    From 2009 to 2016, Dandan worked at Global Times (English edition) as Section Editor and reporter in the features section. Previously she worked as director and reporter at Interntional Channel Shanghai and producer at China Radio International.

  • Yiwen Cai (Reporter at Sixth Tone)

    Yiwen Cai

    Reporter at Sixth Tone

    Cai Yiwen is an education and health reporter at Sixth Tone, a Shanghai-based digital media. Her reports cover a variety of topics on education, including China’s rural education, gaokao reform, tertiary education, education disparity, and so on.

    Yiwen has won two SOPA (The Society of Publishers in Asia) awards in 2017 and 2018 respectively for reporting projects she participated in. In 2018, she won the Global Health Reporting Award held by International Journalist Center for her story about rural families with severely ill children.

    Yiwen graduated from Peking University and received an M.A. in Asian Studies from Cornell University. Prior to Sixth Tone, she had worked for a local newspaper in New York City where she reported and edited stories about Asian immigrants.
