To succeed in China, CEOs must continuously evolve. To capture the 'must-have' skillset for CEOs leading multinational companies in today's China, Dr. Laurie Underwood conducted extensive interviews with 30 CEOs and expert consultants in China. The findings -- compiled in the just-released book China CEO II (Wiley, 2020) co-authored by CEIBS MBA Associate Dean Dr Juan Fernandez -- will be shared at the Monthly Member Briefing on July 7th at 17:30 PM to 19:30 PM at Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel.


The program will also feature a panel discussion with three of the "China CEO's" featured in the book:

    Kenneth Jarrett

    Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group

    Kenneth Jarrett, based in Shanghai, is a Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, where he draws on decades of business and diplomatic experience in China and across East Asia to provide perspective and advice to businesses, investors, and other organizations with interest in the region.

    Most recently, Mr. Jarrett spent five years as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Under his leadership, the Chamber helped hundreds of companies establish and grow their networks in China and navigate operational and regulatory challenges.

    Previously, Mr. Jarrett was a distinguished diplomat whose positions included service as Consul General in Shanghai, and as Deputy Consul General in Hong Kong. His 26-year foreign service career also included postings in Beijing, Chengdu, and Singapore. His government roles in Washington, D.C, included serving as Director of Asian Affairs at the White House National Security Council. Following his government service, Mr. Jarrett served as Chairman of Greater China for APCO Worldwide.

    Mr. Jarrett is a frequent commentator on the business environment in China, and he has been quoted in outlets including Bloomberg, the Economist, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, among others.

    He is the recipient of the Magnolia Award (Silver) from the Shanghai government and is a member of the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations.

    Mr. Jarrett earned an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University and an M.A. in National Security Studies from the National War College. He received a B.A. in History from Cornell University. He speaks Mandarin Chinese.

    Alain has been with Microsoft for more than 25 years, where has led teams on four different continents in a variety of roles. He was Corporate Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Microsoft’s Sales Marketing and Services Group before taking up his current position in Beijing.

    Alain graduated from University Claude Bernard with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and social sciences, and from the Institut Superieur de Gestion in Paris with a Business Administration degree.

    A over 30 year veteran of The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC), Curt has been President of The Coca-Cola Greater China, Korea & Mongolia Business Unit (TCCC GC & K BU) since September 2016. The GC&K operation covers more than 1.7 billion population, directly employing more than 51,000 system associates and supporting over 500,000 additional jobs.
    After successfully engineered the refranchising to build even stronger two bottler franchising system in China, Curt is driving the GC&K to become the fastest growing market for TCCC. The Coca-Cola GC&K made it to the finalist of the 2018 The Woodruff Cup for Best All Around Performance across all the Company’s Business Units.
    Since joining Coca-Cola USA in 1983, Curt has served a wide range of executive positions in the USA and a number of ASEAN countries before being appointed Managing Director of The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Egypt in 2000. In late 2003, Curt became Senior Regional Director for the Western Africa Region and was appointed President of the North and West Africa Division in January 2005, covering 27 countries. Later Curt’s portfolio expanded to 34 countries to include the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan as President of Middle East and North Africa Business Unit.
    Curt has been named to the Forbes Top Ten influential leaders list in the Middle East for 6 consecutive years. In 2012, his MENA Business Unit was awarded The Woodruff Cup, an award recognizing top company performance. Curt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Indiana University Kelley School. He is a graduate of the Executive Development Program at Stanford University. Curt sits on the Board of the Indiana University Foundation and Kelley Business School Dean’s Advisory Council. He is currently Chairman of Coca-Cola Bottlers Manufacturing Holdings Limited. and its subsidiaries. Curt was recently named to The Indianan University Distinguished Alumni Service Award recognizing the Indiana’s top accomplishment in their field of education. Curt has extensive experience as a Board Director for independent Bottlers, community and business-based organizations.

    Ms. Zhang Kai was appointed as Chief Executive Officer & General Manager of Manulife-Sinochem in February 2016. As the first Sino-foreign life insurance joint venture, Manulife-Sinochem has successfully built its footprint across 51 cities in 14 provinces in China. Kai is a member of Manulife's Asia Division Executive Committee (ADEC).
    Prior to joining Manulife-Sinochem, Ms. Zhang was Country Business Manager for Citi's Consumer Bank in China and Executive Vice President of Citibank (China) Co., Ltd.,
    responsible for wealth management business, credit card and consumer assets businesses. Previously, Ms. Zhang served as Chief Financial Officer, Head of Franchise Development and Country Marketing Director at Citi China.
    Ms. Zhang has over 20 years of financial services experience across North America and Asia. She joined Citi in 2004 in New York, as part of Citi's Corporate Strategy and M&A Group, and later took the role of Regional Head of Sales and Distribution with Citi Asia Pacific Consumer Bank in Singapore. Prior to joining Citi, Ms. Zhang worked as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and an actuarial analyst with Watson Wyatt Worldwide.
    Ms. Zhang holds an MBA Columbia Business School and a BA in Economics from Mount Holyoke College. She grew up in Nanjing, and returned to China in 2008, she is married with two children.

She is the co-author 3 best-selling China business books -- China CEO (Wiley, 2006), China Entrepreneur (Wiley, 2009), China CEO II (Wiley 2020) -- together with Prof Juan Antonio Fernandez, Dean of CEIBS MBA Programme. She is Sr Associate Professor of Management (adjunct) at International Business School of Suzhou of Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, and a Sr Consultant for Sino Associates. She holds an MBA and CMO from CEIBS, a DBA from Grenoble Ecole de Management.
