In 2021, we witnessed an inflection point in China's auto market, driven by a secular shift and exponential rise of demand for electric vehicles, with China selling over 3 million EVs through November 2021, nearly three times the amount in 2020. Chinese brands captured more than 75% share of the electric vehicles sold in China.

Automakers are now reallocating capital plans and investing in electric mobility platforms and technology. The pandemic has bifurcated the Eastern and Western markets. Investors have assigned huge market valuation to Tesla, and a new class of Smart EV OEMs (NIO, XPENG, Li Auto) are rising rapidly with "digital DNA." Smart device makers (Xiaomi, Huawei, Apple) are the new entrants to the smart EV sector; companies that see the car as a platform for digital services and high-frequency user engagement. A new class of Tier 0.5 suppliers are restructuring the traditional automotive supply chain as vehicles become smart devices.

It is not yet clear that China leads the mass commercialization of smart EV technology, but the traditional auto industry must get in this emerging market if they are to remain competitive.
