AmCham Shanghai's Financial Services Committee (FSC) will host an event on 2024 China Investment Outlook on Thursday, April 11 from 12:00 - 1:30 pm in the AmCham Shanghai Conference Room.


As China continues to assert its position as a global economic powerhouse, understanding the complexity of its investment landscape is crucial for investors and businesses seeking growth and diversification.


Engage with leading industry experts and thought leaders as they discuss the latest trends, opportunities and challenges in China's investment ecosystem. This panel event will include top experts who will compare different investment strategies including: long-term investing versus short-term trading, private versus public markets, onshore (RMB) versus offshore (USD) exposure, as well as top-down versus bottom-up and value versus growth approaches. The event will start with a brief primer by Han Lin (NYU Shanghai) on the China economy. We will then be joined by a panel of financial experts consisting of Michael Zhang (Softbank), Wenjie Lu (BlackRock), Brett Barna (Barna Family Office) and Nan Li (Jiao Tong University) who will share their insights on the China investment landscape.

    Michael Zhang has 30 years of extended experience in investing and managing industrial and high tech business cross continents. He has proven track record in growing diversified industrial business with P&L responsibilities and experienced in investment, M&A and business consolidation.

    Now with SBCVC as managing partner mainly responsible for the investment and portfolio management of Industrial sector . Before joining SBCVC as managing partner, H e was the Asia Pacific President of Dover Corporation (Symbol DOV, US public company) based in Shanghai. Michael joined Dover Corporation and established its China headquarter in 2009. He has been leading Dover’s acquisition and investment team in the reg ion, closed multiple deals. Under his leadership, Dover’s business has shown strong growth both in size, profitability, talent bench, brand recognition and employee confidence.

    Before Joining Dover, he has worked for ABB since 1996, served as ABB China VP, ABB Singapore VP, and global head of ABB control product’s channel business based out in ABB US.

    Serves as current president of Shanghai Pudong Foreign Investment Enterprise Association.

    Wenjie Lu is Chief Investment Officer of BlackRock China Fund Management Co. He joined the firm in February 2017 and now leads China onshore investment team across multiple asset classes. Wenjie is also responsible for formulating in-depth local market insights, presenting these as well as views from investment team externally and internally, and developing BlackRock’s global investment capability on Chinese assets.

    Prior to joining BlackRock, Mr. Lu was a China Equity Strategist at UBS Securities based in Shanghai, where he led the China H-share strategy research team which was awarded in polls organized by Institutional Investors and AsiaMoney. He started his career at Deutsche Bank Hong Kong as an analyst in the China macro research team. He also previously worked at Ping An Insurance and China International Capital Corporation.

    Mr. Lu holds a B.S. and a M.Sc degrees from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and a M.Eng degree from Ecole Centrale de Paris.

    Nan Li is the Associate Professor of Finance at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Before that , she was with Antai College of Economics and Management (ACEM), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), as an Associate Professor in Finance from 2014.

    She is the Vice Director of SJTU Securities Research Investment Institute and an affiliated researcher in China Banking Industry at the SJTU Institute of Industry Research. After receiving her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 2005, she started her academic career in the Department of Finance, NUS Business School at the National University of Singapore. She was an affiliated researcher at the Risk Management Institute and the Institute of Real Estate Studies in NUS.

    Nan Li's research field is financial economics and financial econometrics, focusing on macro asset pricing. Her current works include pricing intangible capital and robust decision-making under ambiguity in the financial market. Her work with Lars Peter Hansen and John C. Heaton on Consumption Strikes Back? Measuring Long-Run Risk was published in the Journal of Political Economy in 2008. In addition, her articles and opinions on Digital RMB, Ant IPO Suspension, Default of Evergrande, Delist of Didi, and other timely topics in the financial market and financial regulations in China appeared on Nikkei Asia, Reuters, SupChina, FT Chinese, Xinhua net, the Paper, and other news media in English and Chinese.

    Nan Li teaches Asset Allocation and Risk Management in the MBA program, Introduction to Fintech, and all-in-English courses on Bank Management, Introduction to China Banking Industry, and Time Series Analysis in Macroeconomics and Finance to undergraduate and Ph.D. students. Her courses are open globally via online learning platforms such as iCourse, Global Hybrid Classroom Program of Global MOOC Alliance, APRU Virtual Student Exchange Program, and Jiao·Tong Global Virtual Classroom.

    Proprietor at Barna Family Office

    Brett Barna manages a portfolio of cross border early stage and public markets investments as proprietor of the Barna Family Office. He served as Chief Investment Officer for Galaxy Investment Partners, the family office of Michael Novogratz, co-founder of The Fortress Investment Group (formerly listed as FIG US). There, he managed an investment team deploying capital into liquid market strategies and opportunistic growth investments across several portfolios and worked on building the infrastructure for external capital.

    Prior, Brett managed money at Moore Capital Management for seven years, starting in 2009. At Moore, he directly managed money both for the investment funds and founder Louis Bacon’s family office. Brett generated over $1bn in P&L for the firm over seven years and, in 2011, was the youngest portfolio manager the firm had appointed.

    Before Moore, Brett was an analyst at Perry Capital and before that at the investment bank of Lazard Frères et Cie in New York. At the University of Michigan, he triple majored in Chinese studies, mathematics, and economics and was president of the Rugby Football Club. He currently supports several charitable foundations including The Robin Hood Foundation, Many Hopes, PANCAN, City of Hope Hospital, and Last Chance Animal Rescue.

    Han Lin is an Assistant Professor of Finance at NYU Shanghai. In addition, Han is the China Senior Advisor to The Asia Group (TAG) drawing upon nearly 20 years of in-country experience in China’s financial markets and corporate strategy.

    Prior to his current positions, Han was the Deputy General Manager of Wells Fargo Bank, China, where he served as Interim Country Manager and a member of the Management Control Committee, which oversaw the bank’s China governance and risk management. Han also led the China Corporate Banking business, which advised Wells Fargo MNC clients on their U.S.-China cross-border strategic financing and trade needs. Earlier bank roles included Asia Financial Institutions Payments Product Sales Manager; Senior Coverage Banker in the China Financial Institutions Group (FIG); and corporate strategic projects analyst.

    Han holds advanced degrees, including an MA in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, an MS in Global Finance from HKUST-NYU Stern, and an LLM in China Civil and Commercial Law from Fudan University Law School. He completed his undergraduate degree in business (BBA) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    Han is active in the American Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai, having served on the Board of Governors and as a former Chair of the Chamber’s Financial Services Committee. He previously served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and Peace Corps (RCPV Ukraine). Han lives in Shanghai with his wife and two daughters.
