‘Developing Leaders’ – Well-intentioned Myth or Valuable Mission?

AmCham Shanghai's Education Committee and HR Committee are pleased to jointly hold a discussion of leadership development from 12pm-1:45pm, June 19th.

The leadership challenge in China is evolving as rapidly as the macroeconomic environment overall. But even though training entities and HR departments love to talk about 'leadership development,' is it a real and achievable mission, or just corporate jargon? How can we know? What if anything can really help leaders to develop here, whether they be local or foreign, to rise to the challenge of a globalizing China and its increasing interactions with the rest of the world?

Join us to hear from the following three leading industry experts:

Tony Ling, CHO at OYO, will discuss 'what organizations are doing internally to develop stronger leaders – corporate universities, internal metrics/KPIs/evaluations'.
Brian Sun, Senior Manager of PwC's major learning initiatives You Plus, will talk on 'how consultancies like PwC are developing their own leaders as well as supporting leadership development for their clients'.
John Van Fleet, representing the Antai College's executive education initiative, will share 'how business schools help the corporate sector develop leaders (other than with degree programs such as MBA)'.

Tony Ling
CHO at OYO Hotel
Tony Ling is currently CHO of OYO Hotel. Prior to working this job, he was also General Manager of HR at Wanda Culture Group, Vice President and CHO at SF Express Co., Ltd, VP of HR at Dianping, HR director at IBM Greater China and VP of HR at AstraZeneca. Tony Ling has over 20 years’ experience in HR management. Him and his team were awarded the Prize of Best HR Manager by “China Staff” several times and he has also won HRoot's Magazine "Top 10 HR Managers of the Year" award twice.

Tony Ling is also the Committee Chair for Human Resources at AmCham Shanghai.

Brian Sun
Senior Manager at PwC China
Brian has 21 years of professional experience in international cities from London, Hong Kong, Singapore to Shanghai. He specializes in the professional practice of talent acquisition and assessment. Brian is a Senior Manager, Priority Services – Education of PwC China, He delivers career management course and career coaching to young professionals enrolled in the PwC You Plus Programme. Prior to joining PwC Priority Services, Brian has over 18 years of experiences in executive search & selection for Fortune 500 and FIEs that have strategic interests in Greater China. Brian has also worked with Marks & Spencer plc (London) and Antal International (Hong Kong)

Brian is a Singaporean, educated in England and graduated from Queen Mary, University of London.

John D. Van Fleet
Director, Corporate Globalization of Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Van Fleet’s Asia career spans ten years in Japan (1991- 2000) and eighteen in China (to present). He has extensive experience throughout the region in corporate strategy, business development, marketing and consultancy.

He currently serves as Director, Corporate Globalization, and adjunct faculty, Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a campus where he’s been based since 2003. For nearly a decade through 2017, Van Fleet also served as Assistant Dean, USC Marshall School of Business, and Executive Director, USC-SJTU Global Executive MBA in Shanghai.
