About Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer and bandleader, an educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He has created and performed an expansive range of music from quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras and tap dance to ballet, expanding the vocabulary for jazz and classical music with a vital body of work that places him among the world's finest musicians and composers.

A Century of Jazz in Shanghai

In 1919, a new style of music from the United States of America called jazz was first heard in a cafe in Shanghai. Over the next 20 years, Shanghai became world famous as a city of Jazz Age nightlife, with dozens of cabarets, ballrooms, and nightclubs in which people danced the night away to jazz orchestra. Many legendary figures in the history of jazz played and led bands in the city during that era, including Buck Clayton and Valaida Snow, as well as the even more influential if lesser known jazz pianist Teddy Weatherford, who lived in Shanghai during the 1920s and '30s before moving to India. Shanghai also gave birth to modern Chinese popular music through the compositions of Li Jinhui and other songwriters of the age. Fast forward to the 1980s, when the strains of jazz could once again be heard in the city's hotels. Since the 1990s, a new golden age of jazz began with the establishment of dozens of live music clubs and bars in the city, which attracted jazz musicians from all over the world and helped to train a new generation of Chinese jazz musicians. Shanghai has again become a city of jazz, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai is the latest club to join a century-old tradition of jazzing Shanghai, bringing this uniquely American yet global style of music to even greater heights in the city!
