This training is designed for professionals of any nationality-- who want to increase their work efficiency and quality of collaboration when dealing face-to-face but also at a distance with different cultures. We will focus on developing self-awareness and discover how our own work style impacts both colleagues and counterparts from different cultures. We will learn in the workshop how to design strategies to leverage similarities and bridge the gaps. We will especially focus on the Chinese, Japanese, French, German, and American work styles. At the end of the module, each participant will design their own action plan.

Understanding cultural differences and how we have all been conditioned in a different way

  • From stereotypes to prototypes โ€“ Your own expectations towards one or several target cultures
  • What is culture and how does it impact each of us?
  • Comparing varied core values from some western countries (USA, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlandsโ€ฆ) and from Asia (China, Japan, Indiaโ€ฆ)
  • Key differences between western and Asian mindsets


Measuring the impact of one's own cultural style onto other cultures

  • Five cultural dimensions to compare and contrast behaviors โ€“ How do they play out in the key cultures you are dealing with?
  • Identifying your profile and becoming aware of how you are perceived by other cultures
  • Getting out of your comfort zone and adapting to increase impact


Developing cross-cultural competences in the workplace

  • Contrasted management and leadership expectations in the West and in Asia โ€“ Practical exercises to adapt one own's style for increased impact
  • How to best manage meetings and give efficient presentations โ€“ What is expected? What is the decision-making process in various cultures?
  • Giving efficient feedback โ€“ Practicing giving powerful feedback to a French, an American, or an Asian employee
  • Communicating efficiently โ€“ Role play
  • How to solve problems, recognizing conflicts and finding solutions


Adapting your own work style

  • Working together towards a common objective
  • Optimizing differences and maximizing synergies
  • How to maintain trust and tips to develop efficiency when working at a distance.

    Senior Consultant, Trainer, and Coach

    Sylvie is an enthusiastic Mandarin speaking consultant specializing in crosscultural communication, management, and leadership with 20 years of business experience in global environments. She has worked in her career with managers from over 40 nationalities.
    She consults, trains, and coaches for global companies across activity sectors.

    She is passionate about helping managers and leaders meet their challenges and contributing to increase the company’s overall performance. She accompanies many western leaders dealing with China and Chinese leaders dealing with the West. She finally teaches at ESSEC business school continuous education.

    She moved to China 2005-2008, managing teams and leading business activities in the north of the country then in Shanghai. She has also lived and worked in France, USA, and Germany. She finally speaks fluently four languages (French, English, Chinese, and German). She currently resides by Paris, France, traveling regularly to other parts of Europe and to China three times a year.

Registration

  • All registrations shall be made online before the session. For full-day sessions, payment also shall be made before the session.
  • For half-day sessions, AmCham Shanghai members are eligible to attend free of charge with Training Credit*; AmCham Shanghai members without Training Credit are eligible to attend at “Member Rate”; Employees who work at AmCham Shanghai member companies are eligible to attend at "Employee Rate".
  • For full-day sessions, AmCham Shanghai members are eligible to attend at “Member Rate”; Employees who work at AmCham Shanghai member companies are eligible to attend at “Employee Rate”; Non-members are eligible to attend at “Non-Member Rate”.
  • Limited spaces are available and attendance will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Walk-in and Cancellation Policy
  • This session requires confirmation of attendance in advance. If you attend this session without prior registration, you will be charged an RMB50 "walk-in" fee as member and RMB100 as employee.
  • Cancellation: If you need to cancel your registration for a half-day session, please notify Ivette Corominas at (86 21) 6279 7119 ext. 5671 or email ivette.corominas@amcham-shanghai.org no less than 24 hours in advance. If you need to cancel your registration for a full-day session, please notify Ivette Corominas at least two weeks prior to the session for a full refund. Cancellation made within two weeks before the session will not be refundable.
  • To ensure that you have a seat, please come to the session on time. Open seats will be released to other guests 15 minutes after the session starts.
