In this workshop, David Roberts ask the question "Are you ready for a digital future?"
Across the globe individuals, and organizations, are struggling with the rapid digitization of our societies.
There are great concerns about the potential impact on jobs and employment as computers and artificial intelligence seem to be replacing manual work at an ever-increasing rate. At the same time, there is huge optimism that these new technologies can be transformational and provide great opportunities for individuals and organizations.
Curiously though the new technologies do not always provide the increased productivity that they promise, and often times merely engulf workers in a stream of data of no real interest or benefit. Think of the daily battle with E-mail that many knowledge workers face for example โ whilst email can keep people very busy from dawn till dusk is the E-mail work that they are doing really productive?
The session will explore some of the most interesting research about the use and mis-use of technology in and out of the workplace. Ideas that we will look at include:
1.'Shadow Work' - which is the unpaid work that fills our days and is enabled by new technologies;
2.'Technological Sleepwalking' โ how and why we sleepwalk into new technologies without fully understanding their potential effects on us and our organizations.
3.'Skunk Works and the Bubble Strategy' how organizations can innovate and explore strategies with new technologies before fully committing to their use.
4.Finally, the session will shine a light on how you, and the organizations that you work for, may develop strategies to be ready for a digital future.
