The AmCham Shanghai China Business Climate Survey is one of the longest running surveys of U.S. business in China. This year, 434 companies shared their views and insights on a wide range of topics, including trends in company performance, challenges and investment, as well as on questions about trade policy, tariffs, investment reciprocity, VPNs, the Belt and Road Initiative, and Made in China 2025.


AmCham Shanghai, in conjunction with our report partner, PwC, cordially invites you to the release of the 2018 China Business Report on Thursday, July 12, from 11:45–13:50 (Presentation begins 12:30). This buffet lunch presentation is a unique opportunity to learn what your industry peers think about the operating environment in China. Distinguished panelists will also offer their interpretation of the data, as well about the opportunities offered by trends such as growing consumption in China.

    Partner, China Consulting Clients & Markets Leader at PwC

    Dan DiFilippo is PwC's Clients & Markets Leader for the consulting business in China and Hong Kong. He has worked with Fortune 500 clients developing and implementing solutions in areas such as strategy and operations, risk management and compliance, people and change management, finance, and technology. In this capacity he has served many of PwC's largest, global clients and has spent extended periods of time working outside the US, in markets such as China/Hong Kong, the UK, Ireland, Germany, and Japan.

    In addition to his client work, Dan has served as PwC’s Global and US Data & Analytics Leader. Prior to that, Dan served as PwC’s Global TMT (Technology, Media, and Telecommunications) Industry Leader, PwC’s Global Advisory Markets Leader, where he was responsible for the Advisory line of service industry program and its support of PwC's Global Priority Clients, and PwC’s Emerging Markets Leader. He has also served as the Global Leader for PwC Consulting and the US Leader for PwC’s Governance, Risk and Compliance practice.

    He is also actively involved with many of PwC’s diversity initiatives and is a partner champion for diversity programs for minorities and women. Dan has a B.A. in Accounting from Rutgers University Newark College of Arts & Science.

He has been helping companies improve their performance over 30 years in applying experience gained across three continents and convergent industries to help his clients meet their objectives and achieve rapid growth.

    Mark works across acquisitive and organic growth strategies of clients with a focus on excellence in execution. He’s been involved with operating model design, post deal integration, business service alignment, sales and inventory operational planning, go to market analysis and implementation, as well as commercial due diligence and market entry feasibility.

    Mark began his career in business service transformation. He is an American CPA, qualified as a Chartered Accountant and has an eMBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management.

    Director of Asia Operations at Procon Pacific

    Dan is a global supply chain executive with 30 years of international manufacturing and logistics experience.

    Dan earned his Master in Global Supply Chain Management from USC Marshall and is an adjunct professor at UCLA, University of Dayton and SJTU Antai - with a focus on Doing Business in Asia and Asia Supply Chain.

    As Director of Asia Operations for Procon Pacific (industrial packaging), Dan is responsible for production facilities throughout China, Vietnam and India. Dan’s career has included Shanghai, Taipei, Jakarta, Panama, Mexico City and the USA, in industries ranging from ocean container carrier management to forwarding to contract manufacturing.

    Dan has served on several boards and executive committees; including AmCham Shanghai, US DOS Overseas Security Advisory Council and the USC Marshall Global Supply Chain Center, writes for the Journal of Commerce and often lectures to congressional delegations on operations in China.

    A 10-time marathoner and education philanthropist, Dan believes that a work-life balance is indeed very healthy.

    President, Greater China at 3M China

    Stephen M. Shafer has been President of 3M Greater China Area since October 2016, responsible for the leadership and management of all businesses of 3M’s largest overseas market, 3M Greater China Area, which includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

    Shafer joined 3M in 2010. Before coming to China, he was Vice President of 3M Business Transformation, responsible for improving the company’s operational strategy and business model to better serve customers, enabled by a single global Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Shafer was also a former Strategic Marketing Director of 3M Safety and Security, leading several multi-billion dollar M&A projects and former Business Director of 3M Packaging Systems and Global Tapes and Adhesives.

    Prior to 3M, Shafer was Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company, a top global consulting firm, from 2002 to 2010, counseling top executives on commercial optimization, strategy and performance improvement initiatives. Between 1997 and 2002, Shafer worked at Ford Motor Company and made outstanding achievements in driving profit growth, cost reduction and effective logistic management for the company. Prior to that, he was an engineer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, supporting various aeronautics projects.

    Shafer holds a BS in industrial engineering from Northwestern University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
