Environmental issues in the workplace are a growing concern for companies, especially as they relate to employee health and safety. Bad air quality and ventilation as well as asbestos-riddled structures can lead to sick building syndrome, which can compromise the health and comfort of your employees. Not only can poor workplace environments reduce productivity, but research has shown they may be linked to asthma, lung cancer and other medical problems.

Confronting the problem makes business sense by way of health management savings as well as low absenteeism and contained insurance premiums. To ensure compliance, employers should consult EPA and OSHA guidelines and follow directives. If necessary, consult an environmental consultant to determine cost-effective ways to handle workplace environment issues.

Claire Stephens
Local Director, Integrated Workplace Solutions of JLL
Seconded to Nike’s Greater China Head Quarters, Claire leads the strategic occupancy planning work for the reorganization for the company’s headquarters building, which houses over 2000 employees. The only project team member based in the building, she is responsible for soliciting stakeholder needs, collating the resulting occupancy, meeting and storage plans into a strategy and feeding this to project managers, move managers, transition managers, facilities managers, IT and the design team.

Peggy Lu
Family Medicine Physician, Department Chair and Assistant Chief Medical Officer at Shanghai United Family Hospital
Dr. Lu is a graduate of the Zhongshan University in Guangzhou and the University of Sydney. She is a member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and has 30 years of clinical experience, including 20 years working in expatriate medicine. She works with the acute or chronically ill, as a bridge between primary care and bridge patients with specialist care, and as an educator and advocate for disease prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion.

Originally from the US, Louie founded PureLiving in 2010 to meet the demand for clean indoor air and water in China. Today, with branches in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Hong Kong, and New Delhi, PureLiving is Asia's leading indoor environmental quality testing and consulting firm. PureLiving advises on air and water quality, mold, asbestos and lead exposure issues and also implements solutions for clean air including the design and installation of filtration and IAQ monitoring systems.

Louie has over 20 years of scientific consulting experience as a chemical warfare engineer with the US Army, trained with the US CDC, and was formerly the Asia Strategy Director for Thomson Reuters’ Scientific Division. He has led or supervised over 1800 environmental and green building projects in China and the US. Cheng is a graduate of Harvard College and Dartmouth Business School.
