Technology Innovation and R&D are about ideas driven forward by passion and talent. Shanghai is home to many R&D centers of U.S. firms and many of their executives are members of AmCham Shanghai. Shanghai also has an active presence of many U.S. University Alumni associations which represent the next generation of ideas. AmCham Shanghai's Technology and Innovation Committee is hosting an event on R&D Discussions with U.S. Alumni Chapters on June 8 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Beef & Liberty (K.Wah Centre).


This event is designed to bring together AmCham Shanghai Corporate members engaged in R&D activities with the U.S. University Alumni association members to focus on technical or business aspects of R&D and innovation. Listen to technology trends in various industries and engage in stimulating discussion in smaller groups for deeper insights, bounce ideas, and get advice on professional development in Tech & Innovation areas. Confirmed R&D experts include executives from Abbott, Corning, Johnson & Johnson,Honeywell, L'Oréal, and Medtronic.


We hope this event will be a start towards building an ecosystem of like-minded people passionate about what technology & innovations can do to make this world a better place!


*Note: The ticket for the event is RMB 150 for AmCham Shanghai Members and Universities Alum and RMB 200 for Non-Members. The price includes refreshments, 1 glass of wine, and a choice of beer or soft drink. Any additional drinks please pay at the restaurant at your own cost.

  • Dr. Peng Yin (Head of Diagnostics China R&D Center at Abbott)

    Dr. Peng Yin

    Head of Diagnostics China R&D Center at Abbott

    Dr. Peng Yin has been with Abbott for 14 years since 2004. Currently, Dr. Yin is the Head of Abbott Diagnostics China R&D Center in Shanghai since 2014. Prior to his current role, he was the Global Scientific and Medical Affairs Director, Abbott Diagnostics in Chicago. Prior to joining Abbott, Dr. Yin worked as a Senior Scientist at Zycos in Lixington, MA for four years; and practiced as an Abdominal Surgeon for 5 years in Tianjin, China.

    Dr. Yin currently is a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FACB); previous chair of Industry Division, AACC; Executive Committee Member of the Emerging Technology Division, IFCC, previous Congresses and the Conference Executive Committee Member, IFCC; as well as the Member of Biological Diagnostic Technology, Branch of China Medicinal Biotechnology Association; Committee Member of China Diagnostic New Technology and New Material Biomarker Group; the honorary professor of Tianjin Medical University Cardiovascular Institute and TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital in China. He is also on the editorial board of both Journal of Human Virology & Retro Virology and Journal of Virology & Current Research. He has published many high quality scientific research papers in the world’s leading science journals such as Cell, Nature, and Journal of Virology.

    Dr. Peng Yin earned his Medical Doctor Degree (M.D.) from Tianjin Medical School in China in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology from University of Manitoba in Canada in 1998. He also completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard University Medical School in 2000.

    Luc Yu is the new product development manager in Corning Research Center China. He graduated from University of Science and Technology of China with Bachelor degree and Tufts University in the US with Ph.D degree in physics. During his career so far, he has worked in different companies with various roles in advanced material field, including research, business development, and investment. Currently he is responsible for identifying new opportunities in hope of developing new product and business for Corning to better expand China market.

    China Head - Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing Sciences at Johnson & Johnson

    As a senior management team member of Global Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing Sciences (PDMS) and China R&D, Janssen, Johnson & Johnson (JnJ) and Head of China PDMS, Dr. Jonathan Liu is responsible for JnJ PDMS operations of biologicals, small molecule drug and vaccine development in the Asia Pacific region. He provides oversight to Janssen pharmaceutic manufacturing process R&D, GMP and non-GMP productions and supply chain of clinical trial materials, defines the regional business strategy, manages strategic partnership, ensures the deliverables are made in JnJ R&D portfolio.

    Prior to joining JnJ Dr. Liu had held positions in several multinational pharmaceutical companies in US, academic institutes and government agencies for more than 20 years. He has led many projects in drug discovery, CMC, manufacture process R&D, drug registration and contributed to the successful launch, clinical studies and/or other major milestones of ReFacto®,BENEFIX®,FluMist®, ACAM2000®and 20 other drug products in Pfizer, Sanofi, AstraZeneca and Novartis.

    Dr. Liu holds PhD and DVM degrees. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship in Harvard Medical School. He was a member of Advisory Board or board of directors for the United States National Center of Therapeutics Manufacturing, investment firms, biotech companies, various trade organizations and scientific journal review boards. He likes skiing, fine dining and low key lifestyle with his family.

    Head of R&D at Medtronic

    Dr. Xin Tang is a senior research manager at Medtronic China R&D center. Her team provides subject matter expertise in key technology areas such as materials, biology, mechanics, computer modeling and simulation. On her role, Dr. Tang leads the Research and Technology team to drive innovation and technology pipeline and accelerate product commercialization in China through developing core technologies and partnerships with local academia and clinical research institutions. Dr. Tang joined Medtronic in 2007 and has held various positions as the toxicology subject matter expert, RA specialist, and program manager in Quality, Regulatory Affairs, and R&D functions in US & China. Dr. Tang held a Ph. D. of Pharmacology and Toxicology from Medical College of Wisconsin, and MBA degree from University of Florida. She is an American Board of Toxicology certified toxicologist, and American Society for Microbiology certified microbiologist and has a Regulatory Affairs Certification (RAC US). She received a Clinical Research Conduct and Management Certificate from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Tang has been elected as a Technical Fellow at Medtronic, with is a distinguished recognition of her technical accomplishments.

    Sanford Browne is the Vice President of Research & Innovation at L’Oréal China, where he leads approximately 400 scientists and engineers at the region’s largest innovation centre. The centre encompasses comprehensive research capabilities, from fundamental research on materials, to deep understanding on Chinese Skin, Scalp and Hair, complemented with rich métier expertise on Skin, Hair and Makeup formulations. Mr. Browne is driven and versatile, with a passion for consumer centric design, building teams and a proven track record of delivery in the market.

    He has extensive experience across 3 continents and range of roles, including prior experience in Unilever and Procter & Gamble encompassing research, development, project management and people development.

    Alex Wang serves as Product Marketing and Local PAC Director for Honeywell Sensing & IOT in Greater China. He is responsible to develop and execute product roadmap in Greater China.

    Alex Wang joined Honeywell Sensing and Control in 1995 and has held various positions in Sales, ISC, Asia-Pacific Electronic Sensing Product Marketing Director, Asia-Pacific Strategic Marketing Director. He commanded extensive experience in Customer & Vertical Marketing, Strategic Marketing, Marketing Functional Excellence and Business Development.

    Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering from Tsinghua University, majoring in Precision Instruments. He is Six Sigma Green Belt Certified. In 2013, Alex was certified as Marketing Excellence Master.
