E-sports is the fastest developing phenomenon in the sports industry today. In 2013 just 73 million fans engaged in E-sports and that number exploded to 264 million by 2016. In November 2017 the League of Legends World Championship in Beijing filled the Bird’s Nest Stadium, attracted 60 million fans watching online, and awarded a total prize pool of USD $5,000,000. The city of Shanghai has recently announced an initiative to become the global center of E-sports.
Should we expect E-sports to become the next major global sport? Where are the major challenges and opportunities — not only for E-sports platforms and the sport itself, but also for brands, media, agencies and other associated businesses seeking to connect with the growing mass of participants and fans? What is Shanghai doing to become a global hub for E-sports? Who are the teams and stars we should know about and watch going forward?
