The 19th Congress of the Communist Party of China will be held in Beijing on October 18th and will select the leaders for the next five years. What impact will the outcomes have on American businesses in China and the U.S.-China relationship?

To provide members with more insights on this important meeting, AmCham Shanghai has organized a panel discussion with Dr. Jianzhong Lu (Partner at Brunswick Group), Andrew Polk (co-founder at Trivium/China) and Dingli Shen (Fudan University) to discuss the Party Congress and its impact on US-China relations, China's economic development and US businesses in China. James McGregor, Chairman of APCO Worldwide Greater China will moderate this panel discussion. The discussion will take place on October 27, 2017 from 11:30 to 1:30 at the Langham Xintiandi Hotel (99 Madang Road).

    Chairman at APCO Worldwide

    James McGregor is chairman of APCO Worldwide’s greater China region and author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism, and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China. He also wrote the noted APCO monograph China’s Drive for Indigenous Innovation—A Web of Industrial Policies.

    Prior to joining APCO, Mr. McGregor was the founder and CEO of a China-focused consulting and research firm for hedge funds, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and a chief executive of Dow Jones & Company in China. Mr. McGregor is also a former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, and has long served as a leader of AmCham’s U.S, government relations. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the International Council of Asia Society and a board member of the U.S.-China Education Trust.

    Mr. McGregor is a professional speaker, regular television and radio commentator and a contributor of essays and opinion articles for a variety of publications. He has lived in China for nearly three decades and is fluent in Chinese. He splits his time between Shanghai and Beijing.

    Dr. Lu joins Brunswick from RGE, an international resource development company, where he was Group Executive Vice President (China) as well as Chairman of the Board of its downstream pulp and paper subsidiary, Asia Symbol (Shandong) Ltd. Prior to RGE, he was Acting President of BHP Billiton (China) and before that BHP Vice President of Corporate Affairs in charge of corporate affairs strategy and sustainable business leadership in China. He was also responsible for BHP’s Mainland China uranium business.

    Previously, he served as a project consultant to the United Nations and UNCTAD trade efficiency program. Dr. Lu is founder of the CSR Thought Laboratory in Shanghai, which is a volunteer based collaborative forum for CSR managers of Fortune 500 companies dedicated to leading CSR and Sustainable Business practices. Dr. Lu is also a guest professor at Tianjin Nan Kai University and has served multiple noteworthy institutions in roles focused on sustainable business strategies.

    Dr. Lu received a Ph.D. in E-commerce from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. He also holds a master’s of management and technology innovation from ECP, Paris, and a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China.

    Professor and Associate Dean at Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies

    Shen Dingli is a Professor and Associate Dean at Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies. He is also an Honorary Visiting Professor of Washington University in St. Louis. He has taught international security, China-US relations, and China’s foreign and defense policy in China, the US and at the “Semester at Sea” Program. His research and publications cover China-US security relations, regional security and international strategy, arms control and nonproliferation, as well as foreign and defense policy of China and the US. He is Vice President of the Chinese Association of South Asian Studies, Shanghai Association of International Strategic Studies, Shanghai Association of American Studies, Shanghai UN Research Association, and Shanghai Public Policy Research Association. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Fudan in 1989 and did his post-doctorate in arms control at Princeton University from 1989 to 1991. He was an Eisenhower Fellow in 1996, and advised in 2002 the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for the strategic planning of his second term.
