AmCham Shanghai’s Sports & Entertainment Committee invites you to join our inaugural event China’s Booming Sports Market: Opportunities and Challenges for Leading Players on Monday, September 4 from 11:30 – 13:30 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Grand Ballroom II.

Rob Mills from The Gemba Group will give a presentation on "The State of Play in China", followed by a panel discussion with senior executives from NBA, NFL, and UFC, moderated by industry veteran Mark Fischer, Chair of the recently formed Sports & Entertainment Committee. The presentation and panel discussion will cover China's government-led expansion of the domestic sports industry along with the growing opportunities and challenges for leading brands, agencies, and other businesses in this fast-moving market sector. Panelists Collins Qian from NBA, Stephanie Hsiao from NFL, and Kevin Chang from UFC will further discuss the evolution and innovative growth strategies of the leading North American sports leagues in China. Finally, NBA Legend Paul Pierce will greet the audience and give his impressions on the growth of sports and basketball in China.

    Kevin Chang serves as Vice President, APAC at UFC®, the world’s leading mixed martial arts organization. He is responsible for UFC’s APAC strategy, operations and content distribution. Chang first joined the global brand in January 2011 – June 2013, returning in February 2015. He previously served as the organization’s Vice President of Media in Asia responsible for establishing the brand’s early content distribution and marketing partnerships in the region, as well as setting up the first Asia office in Beijing. Under Chang’s leadership, UFC has aggressively expanded across Asia and delivered live events in Macau, Saitama, Seoul, Manila, and most recently to Singapore with 2 more events planned for 2017. Prior to joining UFC, Chang began his career in the sports industry at the National Football League, where he served as the Director of International Media. A native of Honolulu, HI, Chang holds a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College and a China focused MBA from University of Hawaii, East-West Center for Asian Studies.

    Mark Fischer has enjoyed more than 25 years of building successful sports- and media-related businesses in the Far East. He is currently President & CMO of Oceans Sports & Entertainment, a China-based business providing sports market advisory services to brands, sports properties, and related entities. Mark previously worked in various senior executive roles for the National Basketball Association (NBA) in Asia for 12 years, including as Managing Director of NBA China from 2003-2008 when he led that division’s explosive growth from startup to a valuation of $2.3 billion. Later as EVP & MD of Asia for the Ultimate Fighting Championship from 2010-2014, he established the UFC’s operations in the Far East and drove roughly 10-fold increases in both audience and revenues. Proficient in Mandarin Chinese and residing in Shanghai, Mark holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

    Stephanie Hsiao was named Marketing Director of NFL China in July 2008. Stephanie is responsible for managing the NFL's fan development initiatives in China to create a sustainable fan base and build brand value. She oversees all aspects of local fan development, including content marketing and grassroots football development. Stephanie began her professional career in the sports marketing division at Speedo in Los Angeles. In 2006, she moved to Beijing and began working at Octagon. Stephanie graduated from Princeton University with a degree in East Asian Studies. During her time at Princeton, she was a captain of the Princeton University Swimming and Diving Team where she received the Princeton Varsity Club’s Otto Von Kienbusch “Sportswoman of the Year” Award. A native of Irvine, California, Stephanie now resides in Shanghai.

    Paul Pierce recently retired after a stellar 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Pierce spent the first fifteen years of his career with the Boston Celtics, who drafted him with the 10th overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft. He became a bonafide star as captain of the Celtics, earning ten All-Star nods and becoming a four-time All-NBA team member. After nine seasons of leading the Celtics as their sole star player, Pierce combined with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007 to form a "Big Three" that together led Boston to the NBA Finals in 2008 and 2010. Pierce moved to the Brooklyn Nets in a multiplayer deal after in July 2015, but after just one season there and one with the Washington Wizards, returned to Los Angeles and former Celtics coach Doc Rivers to play for the Los Angeles Clippers for his final two NBA seasons. The Celtics signed Pierce to a contract, enabling him to retire as a member of the organization with which he spent his first 15 NBA seasons. He has made numerous trips to greater China to support the growth of basketball in this region and remains an outstanding ambassador for the global game.

    Collins Qian was appointed Chief Operating Officer of NBA China in 2010. Over his seven years’ tenure at NBA China, Mr. Qian had a variety of managerial responsibilities for NBA’s business operations in China, including Marketing Partnerships, Merchandising, Content and Media Distribution, as well as developing and executing key components of NBA’s China strategy. Mr. Qian also leads NBA’s recent efforts in youth development with strategic cooperation with China’s Ministry of Education (MOE), in which millions of Chinese students receive regular basketball classes and participate in the grass-root league of Jr. NBA across China. Prior to joining NBA, Mr. Qian had a distinguished consulting career from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he opened the firm’s China office in 1993 and was elected to be Partner and Managing Director in 2005. Mr. Qian received his MBA degree from Harvard Business School in 1997, and a Dual-degree of Computer Programming and International Trade from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1992.
