A large scale 2016 U.S. based study found that “60% of managers feel that critical thinking and problem solving skills are lacking in recent college graduates.” From our experience in China, managers feel that critical thinking and problem solving skills are still lacking all the way up to the 30-something-year-old crowd. That’s a frightening fact!

However, all is not lost; with a little training, everyone can evolve into a very effective problem solver. The question is, “HOW?” And the answer is to use a simple problem solving and decision making process that guides and leads you to solutions with clarity and confidence.

“I do not fix problems. I fix my thinking. Then problems fix themselves”

Session Outline

Part 1: Discover your problem solving and decision making style.
Do you naturally look for the one best solution, and then struggle to find this one solution? Or do you naturally think of several ideas and then struggle as you have too many solutions? Convergent thinkers are those who look for just one solution supported completely by facts, and divergent thinkers are those who look for ideas to create choices. Which are you? The best problem solvers go from divergent thinking to create choices, then narrow these choices with convergent thinking. They use a “big/many” to “small/just a few” approach to solve problems. Then we’ll look at how fear affects your problem solving style as fear is often the biggest obstacle in generating solutions and telling someone about it. We’ll find out the fears you have and how to become a fearless decision maker!

Part 2: Creative and Critical Thinking Tools
Critical Thinking Tools
  • Two critical thinking checklists are shared to help you use and follow a logical thought process. No more jumping from one random thought to another as this tool guides your thinking. One checklist is for instant problem solving and the second checklist is for reflective problem solving when you have more time to think and reflect.

Creative Thinking Tools
  • A creative thinking checklist is also shared; creative and innovative thinking is a process of (1) re-framing the problem, and (2) thinking inside the box (not outside). Anyone can find creative and innovative solutions using this creative thinking checklist.
Who should attend?
Anyone in the workplace, from junior managers to senior leaders, who struggles to solve problems and make decisions.
