AmCham Shanghai's Art & Culture Committee invites you to join our Art Mixer on May 21 from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm at AmCham's new Xintiandi office. Come mingle with other art lovers and enjoy an in-depth Miao embroidery experience.
Attendees will be given a guided tour of the artworks, followed by an art talk. Helen Huang, who has spent the past decade collecting the embroideries from Southwest China, Art Professor Xiaoying Wang, and artist Juju Wang will join the discussion.
About Miao Embroidery:
The showcased embroideries were created by ethnic groups such as Miao, Dong, Buyi and Shui. Several of the embroideries are over 100 years old, and a number of limited edition pieces were crafted by pregnant artists. Women of southwestern ethnic groups often prepare two full-sets of formal embroidered clothes, one for herself and one for her daughter. Each set of the dresses can take up to eight years to make, and are only worn during special occasions such as weddings, funerals or holiday gatherings. The embroidery pieces are portraits of the artists, who recorded their romantic lives, prayers and search for happiness in the fabric, and have become longstanding treasures of traditional Chinese culture.
๏ปฟAll attendees will receive a hard copy of the book "A Future Through Needle and Stitches". Food & Beverage will be provided.
