Diplomat, lawyer, judge, soldier, spy, spymaster – just some of the many positions American Norwood Allman held in his 30-plus years in pre-Communist China. Shanghai Lawyer is Allman’s first-hand account of his life - from his arrival as a student interpreter during WWI, to serving as a Chinese and Mexican judge, commanding the American militia in Shanghai and finally, fighting the Japanese army in the battle for Hong Kong in 1941.

This month’s Member Briefing features a talk on May 9 from 17:30 to 19:30 at the Four Seasons Hotel with Douglas Clark who annotated, embellished and illustrated Allman’s memoir (which includes adding an epilogue of Allman’s time in the OSS during the war where he ran counter-intelligence operations in China and when he worked for the CIA post war in China and South America).

AmCham Shanghai's member-only Monthly Member Briefing is an exclusive opportunity to hear from top government officials, experts, and authors on political, social and economic trends in China. Mr. Clark will take us through Allman’s life and provide insight into the American business community of pre-Communist China.

Admission to this event is complimentary. All members are required to wear a current Membership Card during the event for identification purposes. We are unable to accommodate non-member guests at this briefing.
