On January 7, 2026, the United States Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services released the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs). The new, inverted food pyramid recommends prioritizing high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while avoiding highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates. The dramatic change has triggered discussions on what healthy eating means, and how consumers and food businesses will change as a result. China's Food Guide Pagoda, updated in 2022, meanwhile depicts a diet with significantly more plant-based foods (grains and vegetables) than are in the latest US guide.


With so many different guidelines, nutrition and dietary programs, how should consumers choose the best foods? How will these programs be evaluated?
