This segment is a new addition to AmCham Shanghai's Legal Committee in offering Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits to participants. The CLE Seminars are designed to sharpen one's legal skills or provide updates on developments within a particular practice area. These seminars will provide CLE credits to lawyers who are admitted to practice in the U.S.


CLE Credit is made available courtesy of Winston & Strawn LLP, an accredited CLE provider in California, Illinois, New York, and Texas. For these jurisdictions, attendees will receive 1.0 credit hours. The content is appropriate for attorneys of all experience levels.

    Partner at Simmons & Simmons

    Matthew is a partner of the firm's China employment practice and has been working in Shanghai for over 17 years. He advises clients across a diverse range of sectors including retail, financial automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, insurance, education, media, and high-end technology.

    Matthew's extensive experience in employment issues in China includes employment aspects of mergers and acquisitions and restructurings, employment contracts, handbooks, and policies, international secondments, hiring and firing advice, labour union issues, stock options and incentive schemes, social insurance and welfare issues, employee inventor remuneration schemes, restrictive covenants; data protection, employee fraud and investigations, and employment disputes.

    Matthew also has significant corporate transactional and commercial work, advising on foreign direct investment, mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, joint ventures, corporate governance and compliance, regulatory issues, commercial contracts and related business issues.

    Michelle Gon is a partner of McDermott Will & Emery. She is stationed at the firm’s strategic alliance office, MWE China Law Offices, in Shanghai. Her practice focuses on compliance and regulatory matters, including anti-corruption, unfair competition, anti-monopoly and anti-fraud representations.

    Michelle has extensive experience in handling international transactions in a wide spectrum of practice areas across China, the USA and EU countries. With her long term, on-the-ground experience of doing business both within and outside China, she provides practical advice to clients on complex legal issues. Michelle often assumes the role of external general counsel for various clients on strategic development and compliance issues.

    Prior to joining McDermott Will & Emery, Michelle was a Principal at Baker & McKenzie Shanghai from 2005 to 2015. She has also held various roles at Baker & McKenzie including Managing Partner of the Taipei office from 1989 till 2002; served as the Chief Legal Officer/Vice President of Semiconductor Manufacturing International (Shanghai) Corporation from 2002 till 2005; and been an International Attorney for McDonald’s Corporation, headquartered in Illinois from 1986 till 1989.

    Michelle was named as one of the Top 30 Attorneys in China and one of the Top 100 Attorneys in the Asia Pacific region, by Asian Legal Business in 2004. She was listed as a leading lawyer in the life sciences sector in China by Chambers Asia Pacific in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Michelle was listed as a Corporate Investigation and Anti-bribery leading lawyer in China by Chambers Asia Pacific 2017. Michelle was ranked as a Corporate Investigation and Anti-bribery Spotlight Table of Foreign Legal Consultants China by Chambers Asia Pacific 2018.

    She advises corporations across a number of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, life sciences, health care, auto and parts, agriculture, food-related products, cosmetic, wine and spirits, hospitality, manufacturing, information technology (IT) and high tech.

    Michelle is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. She has been lecturing at the renowned Tsing Hua University for its international EMBA programs including TIEMBA for several years.
