Christian Marchant is the Principal Officer at the United States Consulate General in Shanghai. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor. Leading a team of over 400 staff at the Consulate, Christian oversees U.S. outreach to China's economic and financial hub of Shanghai and East China provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui with a population of over 230 million. From 2022-2025, he was Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. During that time, Christian served for more than nine months as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and was also Chargé d'affaires. From 2019-2022, he spent more than two and a half years as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway and was also Political and Economic Counselor. From 2016-2019, Christian was the Political Chief at the American Institute in Taiwan. Earlier, he worked in Washington, DC as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and as the External Political Unit Chief in the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs. His other overseas tours include Hanoi, Vietnam; Prague, Czech Republic; and Beijing, China. In 2010, Christian received the Department of State’s Human Rights and Democracy Achievement Award for his work to expand religious freedom and find creative approaches to human rights cooperation in Vietnam. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Christian worked on Capitol Hill and managed political campaigns. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University. Christian and his wife Jennie have three children. He speaks Chinese, Vietnamese, Czech, and Slovak.
