China CEO Interview Series, Episode 1

The spread of the coronavirus is drastically changing how businesses operate. China-based CEOs were the first to encounter many of these changes and have had to come up with strategies for fractured supply chains, government ordered lockdowns, and changing consumer demands. AmCham Shanghai presents a series of in-depth interviews with CEOs in China on their advice for companies managing through these extraordinary times.


Our first webinar will focus on operational issues in the retail and hospitality industries. It will feature a discussion with Jolyon Bulley, China CEO of the global hotel group IHG, and Mark Israel, China CEO of Value Retail, a London-based operator of luxury retail village shopping centers. They will discuss the how they have managed their businesses during a uniquely difficult time, the lessons they have learned, and how they are positioning their businesses for a recovery. The webinar will take place on 6 PM April 8th Pacific Standard Time / 9 AM Thursday, April 9th Shanghai Time.

    CEO of IHG Greater China

    Jolyon Bulley is Chief Executive Officer of IHG’s Greater China region, based in Shanghai. He is responsible for the management, growth and profitability of IHG's fastest growing region, which includes mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan. An experienced hotelier, Jolyon has held several significant roles at IHG and was appointed CEO for Greater China in January 2018.

    Prior to that he was Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Americas, leading the region's operations for franchised and managed hotels, in addition to cultivating franchisee relationships and facilitating system growth. Jolyon has also served as COO for Greater China, with oversight of strategic planning across the region's operations efficiency, hotel performance, food and beverage offerings, brand performance and
    owner relations.

    Jolyon graduated from William Angliss Institute in Melbourne with a concentration in Tourism and Hospitality. His passions include Australian football, travel and swimming.

    CEO of Value Retail (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

    Mark Israel has been Chief Executive Officer of Value Retail China since 2013. Value Retail develops and operates the “Bicester Village Shopping Collection,” and its 11 luxury shopping outlets across Europe and China. Value Retail China opened its first shopping destination, Suzhou Village, on renowned Yangcheng Lake in May 2014. Shanghai Village opened in May 2016, at the heart of the Shanghai International Resort, adjacent to Shanghai Disney Resort.

    Mark President and COO at Hearts on Fire, a leading diamond jewellery brand that has been a partner of Value Retail. Mr. Israel has also owned luxury home furnishings businesses and has senior knowledge of lifestyle retailing, international retail, branding and general management experience.

    Mr. Israel is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School. He first visited China in 1974, and he has been resident in Shanghai since 2013.
