AmCham Shanghai will host the 3rd COVID Update Briefing with Consul General James Heller and industry leaders. This webinar will be held at 10:00 to 11:00 on Friday, April 15, and focus on consumer and service companies. In addition to Consul General Heller, the webinar will feature Norman Gu, General Manager at Hormel Foods Greater China, Han Lin, China Country Head at the Asia Group, and Haiqing Lu, Chief Corporate Affairs & Strategic Relations Officer at IHG. The panelists will provide short remarks on the impact of Covid on their sectors as well as strategies to cope with and recover from the current situation. The webinar will include a Q&A session.

    Norman Gu

    General Manager at Hormel Foods Greater China

    Norman Gu is General Manager of Hormel Foods Greater China. In his current role, he has full P&L responsibility and oversees strategy formulation, M&A, business development and operations, including three production sites in China (two Hormel plants and one Skippy plant). He also serves as a board director of Beijing Hormel Foods Co., Ltd (JV).

    Norman started his career with Hormel in 2003 as Regional Sales Manager in Shanghai. In 2006, he moved to Beijing as Sales Director, where he was responsible for sales, marketing and logistics for North China. Two years later, he relocated to Shanghai to oversee Hormel’s national Foodservice business. He was named VP of Sales & Marketing China in 2014, and was responsible for both Foodservice & Retail. He was appointed to his current role in 2016.

    Norman received his MBA from Renmin University of China. He completed the Executive Development Program at CEIBS in 2020. He has served as co-chair of the Food, Agriculture, and Beverage committee at AmCham Shanghai since 2019 and joined AmCham Shanghai Board of Governors for 2022-2023 .

    James Heller

    Consul General at U.S. Consulate Shanghai

    James Heller is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service and Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai.  His previous assignment was Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs at the State Department. In Washington, Mr. Heller has also served in the Office of Taiwan Coordination, Office of Korean Affairs, the State Department’s 24/7 Operations Center, the Office of Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus Affairs, and the Office of Multilateral Trade Affairs.  Overseas, Mr. Heller has served twice at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as well at the U.S. Embassies in Seoul and Kyiv and with Regional Reconstruction Team Erbil in Iraq.

    Mr. Heller has a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Michigan and is a Hopkins-Nanjing Center graduate. His wife Lisa is also a U.S. Senior Foreign Service Officer. They have an adult daughter and son.

    Assistant Professor of Practice in Finance at NYU Shanghai

    Han Shen Lin is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Finance at NYU Shanghai. Prior to his current role, Han served as the Deputy General Manager of Wells Fargo Bank, China, where he served as Interim Country Manager and a member of the Management Control Committee, which oversaw the bank’s China governance and risk management. Han also led the China Corporate Banking business, which advised Wells Fargo MNC clients on their U.S.-China cross-border strategic financing and trade needs. Earlier bank roles included Asia Financial Institutions Payments Product Sales Manager; Senior Coverage Banker in the China Financial Institutions Group (FIG); and corporate strategic projects analyst.

    Han holds advanced degrees, including an MA in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, an MS in Global Finance from HKUST-NYU Stern, and an LLM in China Civil and Commercial Law from Fudan University Law School. He completed his undergraduate degree in business (BBA) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    Han is active in AmCham Shanghai, having served on the Board of Governors and as a former Chair of the Chamber’s Financial Services Committee. He previously served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and Peace Corps (RCPV Ukraine). Han lives in Shanghai with his wife and two daughters.

    Haiqing joined IHG Hotels & Resorts in 2013. He’s currently
    Chief Corporate Affairs & Strategic Relations Officer, responsible
    for managing all external and internal communications and key
    stakeholders’ relations, including owners, media, industry organizations, government authorities, and communities in China.
    Haiqing started his career in the Chinese government foreign service. Subsequently, he was a lecturer for a brief period in
    the University of Maryland’s School of Public Affairs, and an assistant researcher in the university’s China Center. His research
    focused on US-China relations, Taiwan and China macro political
    economics. After his tenure in the public sector, he moved on to
    senior positions in multinational companies including Fortune,
    Ogilvy, Baxter, Diageo, and Tesco.
    Haiqing has used his unique mix of perspectives to help
    strategically guide those in the business community to capitalize on market opportunities and manage corporate risks. He
    holds a master’s degree in Public Management in International
    Security & Economic Policies from the University of Maryland.
    Haiqing lives in Shanghai and enjoys outdoor activities, swimming, and reading.
