    Jaime FlorCruz

Former Chief at CNN Beijing Bureau

Jaime FlorCruz is a veteran China-watcher and one of the longest-serving foreign correspondents in China. While on a three-week study tour of China in 1971, FlorCruz was forced into political exile from his Philippine homeland and unexpectedly found himself stranded in China at the height of the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. He worked on a state farm in Hunan province, Mao Zedong's birthplace, and also in a state fishing company in Shandong Province, and then studied the Chinese language and history at university in Beijing. Following China’s opening in the late 1970s, he got work as a journalist with Newsweek and later spent many years working as a correspondent for TIME Magazine and CNN out of Beijing. FlorCruz has witnessed and reported on the most significant events in China’s past four decades and more, including the country’s economic and social reform. He still lives in Beijing and is an adjunct professor at Peking University.
