AmCham Shanghai and the US-China Business Council are pleased to present a webinar on March 6 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Shanghai time by S&P Global Ratings Chief Asia-Pacific Economist Dr. Shaun Roache and KPMG China, Chief Economist, Dr. Kevin Kang. The speakers will give a forecast of how the outbreak and management of COVID-19 will affect China's economy in the near and medium term. Dr. Kang will focus on the immediate industry impact while Dr. Roache will give the longer-term and international outlook. Both speakers will then take questions. Attendees will have a chance to pre-submit questions and ask questions live via the webinar chat on the day. This event is off the record and will not be recorded.

    Dr. Shaun Roache

    Managing Director, Chief Asia-Pacific Economist of S&P Global Ratings

    Shaun Roache is the Chief Asia-Pacific Economist at S&P Global Ratings. Based in Singapore, he leads the economic research agenda and serves as the primary spokesperson on macro-economic matters across the region.

    Before joining S&P Global Ratings, Shaun was the Strategist and Lead Economist at Temasek, a Singapore sovereign wealth fund, covering China, Japan and emerging markets. Before that, Shaun spent 12 years with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. and Hong Kong, during which time he worked on Brazil and China, and contributed to the IMF’s work with the G20. He started his career in the mid-1990s as a market economist with ING Barings and then Citi in London.

    Shaun holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Birkbeck College, University of London, a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Queen’s University Belfast, and is a CFA charter holder.

    Chief Economist at KPMG China

    Dr. Kevin Kang is the Chief Economist of KPMG China and his research covers a broad range of economic issues. He has over 20 years of research experience in economic growth, policy analysis, business strategy, innovation, and cross-border investment and M&As. He is also an expert on emerging technologies such as the digital economy, AI, fintech, data governance, and Industry 4.0, and analyses how technologies are impacting economic growth and reshaping the business environment. He frequently speaks to companies’ senior executives and helps them stay on top of the rapidly changing macro environment.

    Prior to joining KPMG, Dr. Kang was the Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at Caterpillar, the world’s largest construction and mining equipment manufacturer. He was responsible for Caterpillar’s economic research and industry forecast for the Asia Pacific region. Before Caterpillar, he also worked as a senior economist at Eaton Corporation, a $20 billion diversified industrial company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. He was in charge of its Asia Pacific economic research and the worldwide vehicle industry forecast. He also worked as an economist at the RAND Corporation, a world-renowned think tank in Santa Monica, CA, and as a chief researcher at Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI) in China.

    Dr. Kang received his Ph.D. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and B.A. in international economics from the Peking University. He is frequently interviewed by major media outlets and invited to speak at business conferences to share his economic insight.
