AmCham Shanghai and the US-China Business Council (USCBC) invite you to join a breakfast debrief on the state of US-China economic relations following the 90-day negotiations. This breakfast event will cover the results of the 90-day negotiations that formally end by March 1, analysis of the outcomes, and give an outlook for the China business environment following the negotiations. The program will provide both US and China perspectives, both from the policy and business angles. Speakers include:

    President at AmCham Shanghai

    Ker Gibbs first came to China in 1985 and has worked in various roles giving him broad exposure to US-China relations and business issues facing American companies operating in Asia.

    In the 1990s Mr. Gibbs worked for the Boston Consulting Group in Shanghai. Since then he has split his time between Asia and Silicon Valley, serving in executive positions with Apple, Disney, and high-growth Internet businesses. He moved to Shanghai in 2002 as head of Asia Pacific for a Nasdaq-listed network security company that was acquired by McAfee. His career in high tech led him to banking; he became head of technology and media in greater China for HSBC. As an investment banker he worked with Alibaba, Baidu, and other firms advising on mergers and cross-border transactions.

    From banking Mr. Gibbs moved to direct investments. He was a founding investor in the Crystal Orange hotel group, helping grow the company to 130 properties and 1,500 employees in China. He also led successful investments in real estate, e-commerce, and medical technology companies.

    Before his appointment as president, Mr. Gibbs was elected three times to the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and served as chairman for 2016 and 2017. He also sits on the board of the United Way in China and volunteers with Renewal, a local homeless shelter. He is an op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal, South China Morning Post, and other publications.

    Chief Representative at Capital Group

    Susan has 31 years of diplomatic experience and has been with Capital Group for 11 years. Prior to joining Capital, Susan was the Australian Consul-General in Shanghai, an assistant secretary for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, and had other diplomatic postings in China, the United States, Australia, Papua New Guinea. She holds a diploma in applied economics from the University of Canberra, a bachelor's degree in arts and Asian studies from Australian National University, and a diploma in applied linguistics and translation from Wycliffe College.

    Dr. Wu Xinbo is Professor and Executive Dean, Institute of International Studies, and Director at the Center for American Studies, Fudan University. He teaches and researches China’s foreign and security policy, Sino-U.S. relations, and U.S. Asia-Pacific policy. Professor Wu is the author of Dollar Diplomacy and Major Powers in China, 1909-1913 (Fudan University Press, 1997), award-winning Turbulent Water: US Asia-Pacific Security Strategy in the post-Cold War Era (Fudan University Press, 2006), Managing Crisis and Sustaining Peace between China and the United States (United States Institute of Peace, 2008), and The New Landscape in Sino-U.S. Relations in the early 21st Century (Fudan University Press, 2011). He also has published numerous articles and book chapters in China, U.S., Japan, Germany, South Korea, Singapore and India. Professor Wu is on the editorial board of The Washington Quarterly (published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies) and on the International Board of the Studies in Asian Security book series (sponsored by the East-West Center and published by the Stanford University Press).

    Vice President, China Operations at US-China Business Council

    Jacob Parker is the vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council. In this role he manages USCBC’s two offices in Beijing and Shanghai and oversees the development and execution of China-based research, reporting, and programming on trends of importance to US businesses operating in China. He has worked on a variety of international public and private projects throughout his career. Before joining USCBC, Jacob worked as a program manager at Philips Healthcare where he oversaw implementation of ExIm Bank, Nordic Investment Bank, and Ashra Bank international government loan projects for developing medical infrastructure in China. Prior to that, as the director of operations of the USA Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010, Jacob was responsible for the set-up, maintenance, and general operation of the pavilion, and for sharing American culture and values with the more than 7 million visitors during the six months of operation.

    Gabriel Wildau is Shanghai bureau chief for the Financial Times, where he writes about China’s macro-economy and financial system. He previously served as China finance correspondent and markets correspondent for Reuters, where he wrote daily reports on China’s interbank foreign exchange and money markets. He worked as a research analyst for SK Group China and Beijing bureau chief for GaveKal-Dragonomics, a macro-economic consultancy. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and earned a certificate in Chinese from Tsinghua University.
