With insights from university admission officers, international and bilingual school executives, US Consulate officers, and other frontline education experts, the forum offers valuable and timely information on educational planning for families in a volatile global environment.     Associate Dean of Admission and the Coordinator of International Recruitment at Amherst College

    Xiaofeng Wan is an Associate Dean of Admission and the Coordinator of International Recruitment at Amherst College. He received his B.A. from China Foreign Affairs University in English and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Boston College. He is the Chinese translator of Admission Matters, one of the most widely used college guidebooks in the United States. At Amherst, he leads the international admission team and his recruiting responsibilities include multiple continents around the world and the Northeast region of the United States. He has published multiple widely circulated opinion pieces on Chinese student mobility trends on Inside Higher Education and the quarterly International Higher Education. He has been interviewed and quoted by a number of media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and CGTN America.

    Benjamin Nicholson is the brand manager for U.S. News Global Education in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. He is a dual honors graduate from the University of Nottingham with a BSc in Business, Economics and Contemporary Chinese Studies and a MSc in Business and Economy of Contemporary China. He has studied on an exchange program as an honorary scholar in the University of Nottingham Ningbo and has trained and examined over 4,000 education counselors across six national education agencies, high schools and boutique agencies in greater China and India in various disciplines related to US higher education, including rankings, elite school applications, student visas and overseas student financial aid. He has spent much of his career working in American university admissions counseling in China and has helped Chinese students successfully apply to Ivy League schools in the United States as well as help families and students gain a deep understanding of the American university system. He is passionate about educating students and parents on how to find the right fit, and strongly believes a student’s personal interests, passions and abilities should align with their choice of university.

    Van Fleet’s Asia career spans ten years in Japan (1991- 2000) and eighteen in China (to present). He has extensive experience throughout the region in corporate strategy, business development, marketing and consultancy.

    He currently serves as Director, Corporate Globalization, and adjunct faculty, Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a campus where he’s been based since 2003. For nearly a decade through 2017, Van Fleet also served as Assistant Dean, USC Marshall School of Business, and Executive Director, USC-SJTU Global Executive MBA in Shanghai.

    Since 2014, Cao Huiying has led her team to visit more than 100 international primary and secondary schools, and dozens of American universities in depth. She has provided advises on international education planning, school selection and extracurricular program selection services for nearly 500,000 families who wish to study abroad.

    Huiying graduated from Fudan University with a degree in journalism.

    Lana arrived in Shanghai two months ago and is the founding Head of High School at Huili School Shanghai, part of Wellington College China. Prior to arriving in China, Lana spent 7 years working in Qatar in the Middle East where she worked in three large international schools, most recently as a founding member of the leadership team of a brand new school offering all three IB programmes.
    Originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lana was educated in the UK and after graduating from Oxford University went on to train as a teacher. She began her teaching career in London, UK, where she worked in a number of large schools in the city. As an Assistant Principal, she set up a Sixth Form at Chelsea Academy. Throughout her career, Lana has focused on working with students who are preparing for university entry, including those preparing for top universities in the UK and the US.
    As a school leader, Lana believes in developing well-rounded students who have access to a wealth of opportunities that enable them to discover their passion and find a sense of purpose. This begins with rigorous academic qualifications and teaching that develops a love of learning and the ability to persevere and inquire in times of challenge. Students need to be guided, supported and unafraid of making mistakes in order that they may discover their true potential.
