[This is a Chinese event.]

Shared service centers (SSCs) are a unit within a corporation or organization that supply the company with specialized services such as finance, HR, IT services, facilities, logistics and sales transactions. They are used to not only cut costs for the businesses and standardize processes but also to provide more flexibility in allocating resources to business units. If run correctly, SSCs can save a company an average of 50% of costs.

Companies with annual revenues of ten billion RMB or more have more motivation to set up SSCs. With economy boosting, in the past 5 years, SSCs are growing exponentially in China. According to a report, by the end of 2020, the number of SSCs in China has exceeded 1000 and the number is still growing.

Due to fact that most SSCs are established in the past 5 years, the operational maturity is still relatively low compared to other business functions. Many SSCs share the same problems:

  • Talent shortage & retention
  • Process automation, Data management & Technical capabilities

As a labor-intensive and cost sensitive unit of a corporate, integrating human and technology factors become unprecedented crucial for all SSCs. The future SSC model decides where SSCs executives should put their energy into.

Since the founding of Nanjing SSC Committee, discussions on where the shared service centers will go never stopped. In the committee's opinion, SSCs will develop into three models:

  • Process driven
  • Business driven
  • Capability driven

Each of the models has its representatives at the market. Some combine the 2 or 3 models, most of them indicated it is hard to predict and are eager to learn from others.
