AmCham Shanghai invites you to join us for this Monthly Member Briefing on Tuesday, Mar, 12, from 17:30–19:30 at the Four Seasons Hotel. It will be an evening of engaging conversation and spirited debate as we host one practicing journalist and two recovering scribes who collectively have spent more than 50 years in China. Topics will include U.S.-China relations, the ideological mismatch of China and the West, social issues and their solutions, and the underbelly of a society undergoing a momentous economic transition.


Annual special admission to non-members and students. All members are required to wear a current Membership Card during the event for identification purposes.

    Graham Earnshaw is a publisher and writer who has long lived in the China world. He is the publisher of Earnshaw Books and of China Economic Review. His own books include On Your Own in China (1984), Tales of Old Shanghai (2008), The Great Walk of China (2010), and the Formosa Fraud (2017). He was previously Peking correspondent for Reuters and the Daily Telegraph and spent five years as Reuters Asia editor.

    Erika Kinetz is an award-winning investigative reporter for the Associated Press in Shanghai. She has lived and worked in India, Myanmar, Italy and Cambodia. Her reporting in China has focused on how globalizing criminal networks are taking advantage of China’s rise. She has written about rampant fraud in the anti-counterfeiting industry -- part of an award-winning series about why Western firms are losing the fight against fakes -- as well as money laundering and synthetic drugs. She has contributed to the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Deutsche Welle, NPR, the Christian Science Monitor, Harper’s magazine, and Australia’s ABC News, among others.

    Greater China Chairman at APCO Worldwide

    James McGregor is chairman of APCO Worldwide’s greater China region and author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism, and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China. He also wrote the noted APCO monograph China’s Drive for Indigenous Innovation—A Web of Industrial Policies.

    Prior to joining APCO, Mr. McGregor was the founder and CEO of a China-focused consulting and research firm for hedge funds, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and a chief executive of Dow Jones & Company in China. Mr. McGregor is also a former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, and has long served as a leader of AmCham’s U.S, government relations. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the International Council of Asia Society and a board member of the U.S.-China Education Trust.

    Ian Driscoll is the publications and communications director at AmCham Shanghai. Previously, Ian worked as a freelance journalist and at Reuters. His writing appeared in the Financial Times, Weekend Financial Times, Euromoney publications, the BBC website, and elsewhere.
    Born in Singapore, Ian has lived and worked in Beijing, Hong Kong, London, New York, Shanghai and Sydney. In a different life, he spent a year working as a jackaroo on sheep and cattle stations in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
