AmCham Shanghai's Financial Services Committee (FSC) will host a webinar/ in-person event on Friday, August 19 from 12:00-1:30 pm at the AmCham Shanghai Conference room on the China banking sector.


The core of China's financial system is its banking sector, which either originates or holds over 80% of China's financial assets. Its developments affect participants involved in securities, insurance, asset management, venture capital/ private equity and other avenues of financial intermediation, and touch all areas of the economy.


The event will start with a brief primer by Han Lin (NYU Shanghai) on how China's banking sector is organized, the major players, and comparisons of how it operates differently from that of the U.S. We will then be joined by a superb panel of senior bank leaders consisting of Cheng Ye, Country Manager, Wells Fargo China; Jade Lu, President, SVB Asia and Eddie Ching, Deputy CEO, HSBC China, who will share their extraordinary insights into how changes in this sector affect China's domestic economy and global financial interactions.


For those who can join the event in-person at the AmCham office, sandwich lunch will be provided.

Background


The FSC is the Chamber's committee for members interested in and involved with the financial services space. It provides an off-the-record forum for discussion of relevant topics spanning banking, securities, insurance, asset management, venture capital/private equity, corporate finance, and fintech.

    Country Manager at Wells Fargo China

    Cheng Ye is the country manager for Wells Fargo China . He is also the branch manager of Wells Fargo Bank Shanghai Branch, the managing branch in China. In his role, Cheng fosters collaboration between lines of business and product areas to drive client solutions that align with Wells Fargo’s strategic priorities and appetite. Cheng is accountable to the Shanghai and Beijing Branches’ regulators and oversees corporate governance of all Wells Fargo banking activities in the country, ensuring that they are consistent with the bank’s vision, values, policies, brand, and image.

    Cheng has more than 19 years of financial service experience in domestic and foreign banks. He joined Wells Fargo in 2007 to lead Wells Fargo’s trade business in China, transforming it into a industrial leader of financial institution, commodity, and corporate trade. As head of International Trade Services (ITS) China, Cheng also connected the U.S. with China to elevate the bank’s overall franchise value proposition in Asia Pacific. Before joining Wells Fargo, Cheng held a variety of positions at Bank of Nova Scotia, China Everbright Bank, and China Construction Bank, mainly focusing on trade finance, financial institution, and corporate lending.

    Cheng has been an active speaker and moderator on international conferences, including GTR trade conferences, ICC Academy events, and Trade Advisory Council conference.

    Jade Lu is the President of SVB Asia, SPD Silicon Valley Bank (SSVB), primarily responsible for SVB’s Asia business, including China joint venture bank, SPD Silicon Valley Bank. SVB’s Asia operations include expanding extensive relationships with many of Asia’s dominate venture capital and private equity firms, as well as local Chinese innovation companies.

    With almost 20 years working experience in banking industry, Jade joined SSVB in 2017. She served as Chief Risk Officer, Head of Corporate Banking and Managing Director of SSVB successively. From 2001 to 2017, Jade has extensive experience in two leading international banks including Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and Citibank where she has taken various senior roles and played instrumental role in the Group office, China as well as local branch’s strategic planning, business development and governance.

    Jade has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Fudan University and an IMBA from the University of Hong Kong. She is also appointed member of Science and Technology Innovation Advisory Committee by Shanghai Stock Exchange.

    Eddie Ching is Senior Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited (“HSBC China”) and an Executive Director of the Board of HSBC China. He is also Head of Global Banking of HSBC China.

    Mr. Ching joined HSBC in 1998 and has undertaken various management positions in the Financial Institutions Group in Asia Pacific. He was Chief Operating Officer from 2008 to 2012 and Head of Securities Coverage between 2012 and 2015. Mr. Ching was actively involved in the development of numerous RMB initiatives in Hong Kong. He played an important role in establishing the banking infrastructure for HSBC HK since the RMB internationalisation scheme was promulgated in July 2009.

    In September 2015, Mr. Ching assumed his duty with HSBC China managing the Global Banking business with large corporates and financial institutions. He was appointed Senior Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of HSBC China in July 2020, and assumed the role of Executive Director of the Board of HSBC China in November 2020. Mr. Ching was appointed to the additional role of Head of Global Banking of HSBC China in January 2021.

    Mr. Ching is the Chairman of Hubei Suizhou Cengdu HSBC Rural Bank Company Limited.

    Mr. Ching holds a Bachelor’s degree double majoring in Economics and Logic from the University of Toronto, and an MBA from York University in Canada. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner.

    Han Shen Lin is the Capstone Project Director for the NYU Shanghai MS in Quantitative Finance program and Assistant Professor of Practice in Finance. Prior to joining NYU Shanghai, Han was the Deputy General Manager of Wells Fargo Bank, China, where he served as Interim Country Manager and member of the Management Control Committee which oversaw the bank's China governance and risk management. Han also led the China Corporate Banking business which advised Wells Fargo MNC clients on their US-China cross-border strategic financing and trade needs. Earlier bank roles included Asia Financial Institutions Payments Product Sales Manager, Senior Coverage Banker in the China Financial Institutions Group (FIG), and corporate strategic projects analyst.

    Han holds advanced degrees including an MA in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, an MS in Global Finance from HKUST-NYU Stern, and an LLM in China Civil and Commercial Law from Fudan University Law School. He completed his undergraduate degree in business (BBA) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    Han is active in the American Chamber of Commerce, Shanghai, having served on the Board of Governors, and as a former Chair of the Chamber's Financial Services Committee. He served on the Advisory Board of the MSQF program (2018-2021) and is concurrently a lecturer for the HKUST-NYU Stern MS in Global Finance (MSGF) program. Han lives in Shanghai with his wife and two daughters.
