The 2020 Presidential and Congressional elections are nigh. Their outcomes will determine the makeup of the presidency, Congress, and state and local governments for at least the next two years, and may lead to significant US-China policy change. Understanding the implications of these pivotal elections is crucial for American companies in China.


AmCham Shanghai and USCBC welcome you to a joint breakfast briefing on the 2020 US elections. After opening remarks by AmCham and USCBC, a panel that includes Vice Chairman & Secretary General of Shanghai Development Research Foundation Qiao Yide; Economist Intelligence Unit Director Mary Boyd; USCBC Vice President Matt Margulies; and Albright Stonebridge Group Senior Advisor Ken Jarrett will discuss what the 2020 elections will mean for the US-China economic, political, and national security relationships.

    Mary Boyd is responsible for program development and client servicing in Shanghai. She also provides research and conceptual support on China for Economist Corporate Network program. Before joining the Economist Group Mary Boyd was in the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, serving on assignment in Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan and China (in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing). Since leaving government service she has researched and published on economic development and governance issues in China, and has undertaken consultancy work for the World Bank and other international institutions, as well as multinational companies. She has written for a number of Economist Intelligence Unit publications, including Country Report, China Hand and Business China. She co-authored the Economist Intelligence Unit report: Taking on the Competition: Domestic Companies in China.

    Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group

    Kenneth Jarrett, based in Shanghai, is a Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, where he draws on decades of business and diplomatic experience in China and across East Asia to provide perspective and advice to businesses, investors, and other organizations with interest in the region.

    Most recently, Mr. Jarrett spent five years as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Under his leadership, the Chamber helped hundreds of companies establish and grow their networks in China and navigate operational and regulatory challenges.

    Previously, Mr. Jarrett was a distinguished diplomat whose positions included service as Consul General in Shanghai, and as Deputy Consul General in Hong Kong. His 26-year foreign service career also included postings in Beijing, Chengdu, and Singapore. His government roles in Washington, D.C, included serving as Director of Asian Affairs at the White House National Security Council. Following his government service, Mr. Jarrett served as Chairman of Greater China for APCO Worldwide.

    Mr. Jarrett is a frequent commentator on the business environment in China, and he has been quoted in outlets including Bloomberg, the Economist, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, among others.

    He is the recipient of the Magnolia Award (Silver) from the Shanghai government and is a member of the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations.

    Mr. Jarrett earned an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University and an M.A. in National Security Studies from the National War College. He received a B.A. in History from Cornell University. He speaks Mandarin Chinese.

    Matthew Margulies is vice president of China operations for the US-China Business Council (USCBC). In this role in Beijing he oversees USCBC’s government affairs and advocacy strategy in China, and provides policy analysis oversight. Most recently, Margulies worked as director of the US Chamber of Commerce’s China Center, where he was responsible for promoting and executing US Chamber advocacy and programs relating to US trade and investment policy with China. Prior to that, Margulies served as China Practice Lead and Senior China Analyst for Crumpton Group LLC, a boutique strategic analysis and political risk consulting firm, as well as in roles with USCBC based in Washington, DC, and with the Chinese state-owned enterprise China Unicom Group.

    Qiao Yide is Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of the Shanghai Development Research Foundation, a nonprofit institution established with the aim of promoting research on the issues of development.
    From 1995 to 2003, he worked as Chief Representative and Managing Director of New York Life in China. In 1985, he graduated from the Master of Public Administration program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and then worked at Harvard Institute for International Development where he undertook research work.
    Prior to that, Mr Qiao conducted research at the Institute of World Economy, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences as its Assistant Director
