Since the announcement of China's Opening to the Outside World in 1978, China and the world have developed ties, and China's economic miracle has taken off. Today, China has achieved true global scale as a trading nation, although not in other areas such as finance. Now the relationship between China and the rest of the world is changing. While the world's relative exposure to China has risen, China's exposure to the rest of the world is declining. New rules are emerging to review technology flows and geopolitical tensions are becoming more heated.
The relationship between China and the world is at a pivotal moment. Much depends on whether there is more or less engagement. A new MGI report, China and the world: Inside the dynamics of a changing relationship, simulates the value that could be captured or lost from more or less engagement and finds that value equivalent to as much as 26 percent of global GDP in 2040 could be at stake.
AmCham is pleased to host McKinsey Global Institute Senior Fellow Jeongmin Seong for a read out of McKinsey's latest report, China and the world: Inside the dynamics of a changing relationship, which examines how China's exposure to other countries has declined in recent years while the world's exposure to China has increased. Following the readout, Jeongmin will be joined by Corning China Business Supply Director Steven Gao and Professor of Management Science at Jiaotong University's Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance Hong Chen, to discuss the impacts China's changing role on the global stage will have on industries.
This event is an AmCham Shanghai Government Policy Support (GPS) workshop. The GPS series brings together different voices to deep-dive into Chinese government policy and its effects on American companies in China. In 2019 the program is focused across three tracks: U.S.-China Relations; Supply Chains; and R&D and Innovation. For more information about the GPS program, please contact Daniel Rechtschaffen at daniel.rechtschaffen@amcham-shanghai.org. This program is off record, and seating is limited.
