AmCham is pleased to announce a book talk and reception featuring author James Zimmerman about his just released book, The Peking Express: The Bandits Who Stole a Train, Stunned the West, and Broke the Republic of China. This event will be on the 100th anniversary of when the fateful journey began from the Shanghai-Nanking Railway Station. The event is slated for May 5, 2023, at 6pm; Garden Books, 325 Changle Lu (near Shaanxi Nan Lu), Xuhui District, 长乐路325号,近陕西南路 Shanghai. Wine and canapés will be served.
The Peking Express is an exciting and fast paced story about China's great train robbery of 1923 and full of banditry, political intrigue, heroism, and a reflection of the excesses of the Warlord Era in early 20th century China. The crisis — covered extensively in newspapers around the world — lasted for six weeks while the bandits moved the hostages across the Shandong countryside with the Chinese army in pursuit. Learn more about how AmCham and members of the foreign business community in Shanghai played a key role in the rescue operation during the five week hostage crisis in the Peking Express story.
There will also be an optional walking tour of the Shanghai Railway Museum (沪宁铁路上海车站) from 3:00-4:30pm, where James Zimmerman will give the group a behind the scenes tour of the old Shanghai-Nanking Railway Station, which is where the Peking Express journey began on May 5, 1923. The museum grounds include locomotives and passenger carriages similar to those of the Peking Express. There is no cost to participate in the museum tour other than the museum entrance fee of RMB 10. Zimmerman will meet the group in front of the lobby entrance to the museum at 3pm. The Shanghai Railway Museum is located at No. 200 East Tianmu Road, Zhabei District (闸北区天目东路200号).
