With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) , one of the biggest challenges faced by secondary and tertiary educators is how to adapt teaching practices to incorporate these technological advancements. What sort of curriculum would be most beneficial to ensure that students are better prepared for a world increasingly influenced by AI?


Join AmCham Shanghai's Education Committee on Tuesday, April 23, from 17:30 to 19:30 in the AmCham conference room, where we will hear from three speakers working on and exploring the intersection of AI and education. During this event, they will share their key insights on how to ensure that young people have the tools and perspectives essential to reach success in their future careers.

    American Principal at Shanghai Qibao Dwight

    Robert (Robbie) Shields has been American Principal at Qibao Dwight since 2022. He joined Qibao Dwight in 2018, as a member of both the College Counseling team and faculty as a grade 10 Economics teacher and coach of the Boys Basketball team. From 2012 to 2018, Shields served the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, where he launched the Career Services Office at the Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies.

    Previously, Shields had introduced a study abroad and internship program in China for students at the University of Florida, while working in the University’s Warrington College of Business Administration as an academic advisor and career counselor for undergraduates. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida.

    Steven is Working and living in Mainland China for more than 25 years, Steven specializes in business strategy and technology application, marketing and advertising, content creation, new retail and e-commerce, Generative AI and metaverse opportunities. Currently supporting McKinsey in China, Steven previously served as CEO for the advertising agency ZenithOptimedia and a CVP for Tencent, where Steven was in charge of the Advertising Sales and Marketing Service, working on the alignment of Tencent Video, mobile, portal and social advertising (including WeChat). Steven focuses on the application of integrating technology, data and content to form innovative business solutions for different categories of clients, and therefore brings a corporate perspective to our session.

    Steven earned his MBA degree from the prestigious Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program in Hong Kong.

    James is an educationalist with a wealth of experience in K-12 education. Currently pursuing a few options for a PhD and with over a decade of senior leadership experience, James has held various positions including Principal roles at international schools in Shanghai and Suzhou. James brings an unparalleled combination of K-12 experience, neuroscience knowledge, and a deep understanding of the role of technology in education and its potential impact on teaching and learning in the K-12 landscape.

    James holds a Masters in Applied Neuroscience from King's College London and both the NPQH and a Master's in Educational Leadership.

    Alex McMillan is a High School Tech Coach at Shanghai American School, Puxi. He previously taught MYP Design and English Language Arts. Alex is the co-author of "Designing for Understanding," and “Saigon Artbook”, which are available on Apple Books for free.

    He is interested in various fields such as design, digital music, Generative AI, photography, drones, and volcano hunting. He is passionate about designing educational materials, helping educators enhance their materials through visual communication and design principles, integrating technology in meaningful ways to enhance teaching and learning, promoting digital citizenship, and exploring emergent technologies. Alex is currently involved in leading his school in using Generative AI and is excited to explore its possibilities.

    Alex has worked in education for 13 years and in commercial photography/advertising for 4. He has lived in Asia for 17 years. He received his BA in English and M.Ed. in Education from the University of Oregon. He is currently expanding his role as an educational consultant and working with schools that are interested in creating their own guidance around Generative AI.
