AmCham Shanghai's Entrepreneurship Committee and Legal Committee invite you to join their “how to” workshop on Protect Innovations with Intellectual Property Rights for Start-Ups in China on Wednesday, May 17 from 10:00 – 11:30am at the AmCham Shanghai Conference Room.

Join a group of legal experts including Ningling Wang, Managing Partner, Finnegan Shanghai Office, Jessica Xu, Partner, Junhe Law Firm and Meph Gui, Partner, Global Law Office who will offer their practical tips on protecting innovations with patents, trademarks and copyrights; this session will help start-ups understand how to maneuver the process when working with concepts & products that need to be protected.

During their interactive panel discussion, they will explain:

· Trademark and intellectual property rights in China - what should start-ups be aware of?
· What is the current practice in China since the trademark law changed in 2014?
· There’s a lot of focus on the copying of physical goods, but how does it work when it comes to content?
· What are the things that start-up founders should be aware of when working with new technologies, concepts or content?
· What is the normal process of registering a trademark in China and overseas?
· Practical tips - at what stage should start-ups think about protecting their IP assuming that it could be an expensive process?

    Ningling Wang serves as the managing partner of Finnegan’s Shanghai office. Her practice involves patent prosecution, opinions, due diligence, client counseling, licensing, and patent litigation in the areas of chemicals, chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, semiconductor materials, 3D printing, and nanotechnology.

    Ms. Wang has extensive experience working with multinational and Chinese companies, providing legal advice on IP portfolio management, due diligence, licensing, litigation, and trade secret protection and enforcement.
    She has been involved in various cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and U.S. district courts. She has also represented foreign companies with IP enforcement in China, including judicial and customs enforcement actions.

    Ms. Wang speaks frequently at conferences and seminars in China and internationally on patent-related topics. She taught a graduate course on U.S. IP law at Renmin University of China Law School and a graduate course on U.S. IP law, with patent mock trial, at Shanghai Jiao Tong University KoGuan Law School. Ms. Wang also served as a program professor of law at China Science and Technology University.

    As one of the earliest lawyers to litigate intellectual property (IP) cases in China, Meph Jia Gui is admitted to practice laws in China and the state of California. With solid work experience at leading law firms in China for years, he represented multinationals in relation to enforcement, acquisition and licensing of trademark, copyright, patent, trade secret and domain names. He advises on various IP matters in China relating to the creation, exploitation and protection of IP rights, including contentious and non-contentious matters.

    Meph has a great deal of experience in representing clients for IP lawsuits in different levels of courts in China. Some lawsuits he handled were recognized by the Supreme People’s Court of China as top 10 exemplary cases.

    Meph holds a Master of Laws in European IP Law (Cum laude approbatur), Stockholm University, Sweden, and a Bachelor of Laws, Renmin University of China. Meph is the first Chinese lawyer to become an arbitrator of the World Intellectual Property Organization. Meph was invited by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China as an IP expert to make expert appraisals on state-sponsored national technology projects. As an IP Expert accredited by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, he is one of the very few law experts invited by the Supreme People's Court and the Ministry of Commerce of China to provide IP legislation opinions.

Jessica worked at CCPIT Patent and Trademark Law Office during 1997-2013 and was the deputy director of the Trademark Division. As a trademark attorney, she has extensive experience in the area of trademark litigation, prosecution, and enforcement. She possesses good understanding of Chinese laws relating to trademark, copyright and anti-unfair competition. Jessica’s clients hail from motor manufacturing sectors, hotel, apparel, luxury goods, technology, food and beverages, charity funds and organizations, retail and healthcare companies.

Art and his team are responsible for all legal matters for the region. Before joining Cadence, Art was a senior associate at the US law firm of Morrison & Foerster, where he was based for over 4 years in the firm’s Beijing office. Prior to returning to China in 2007, Art practiced in New York with Schulte Roth & Zabel. Art is a graduate of Princeton University with a major in International Affairs and a minor in East Asian Studies, and holds a J.D. from the George Washington University Law School. Art is fluent in spoken and written Chinese having begun his studies at Princeton and continued at Tsinghua University following graduation, as well as daily on-the-job use for the last 8 years. Art has lived in Shanghai for over 5 years. His hobbies include cycling and snowboarding.

Her focus on applying market knowledge to develop the EQuota platform for applications across the energy value chain.

Barbara’s lifelong interest has been the application of cutting edge technology to open up new markets, enable strategy and transform existing business models. As a general manager in the manufacturing industries in the 1990s, she was a leading edge adopter of B2B e-commerce models. As a Principle Consultant at IBM, she led many of the first company-wide e-business projects for European multi-national companies.

Before joining EQuota she was the Executive Director of Business Transformation at Lenovo in Beijing, where she internal transformation teams which included CRM, Industry 4.0, Supply Chain and Marketing Analytics.

Barbara moved to China in 2005, and has more than a decade of experience in working in both multinational and Chinese companies.
