As the application season is fast approaching, we're bringing our community some powerful perspectives on how high schoolers can do the best job possible choosing which college/university is best for them, and then how to be more effective in applications.


Join AmCham Shanghai's Education Committee on Wednesday, October 9, from 18:30 to 20:30 in the AmCham conference room for an evening filled with the key information they need for not just gaining admission, but having a tremendous college experience, a platform for a tremendous career.

    Associate Dean of Admissions at University of Virginia

    Clara Hoff is the Associate Dean of Admission at the University of Virginia, where’s she’s been an admissions leader since 2018. Previous to joining UVA, Clara served in the admissions function at Brown University the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for a year following her having earned her Masters of Science there, in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. She also holds her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, in Spanish and International Studies.

    Xiaofeng Wan

    Associate Dean of Admissions at Amherst College

    Xiaofeng Wan is an Associate Dean of Admission and the Coordinator of International Recruitment at Amherst College. He received his B.A. from China Foreign Affairs University in English and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Boston College. He is the Chinese translator of Admission Matters, one of the most widely used college guidebooks in the United States. At Amherst, he leads the international admission team and his recruiting responsibilities include multiple continents around the world and the Northeast region of the United States. He has published multiple widely circulated opinion pieces on Chinese student mobility trends on Inside Higher Education and the quarterly International Higher Education. He has been interviewed and quoted by a number of media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and CGTN America.

    Associate Director of Admissions at University of Chicago

    Alexandria Waters serves as Associate Director of Admissions, University of Chicago, where she’s held increasingly senior roles in admissions since 2021. She brings uncommon understanding of China to her role at U Chicago, having worked as a faculty member at Tsinghua University and Hebei University during the years 2011 to 2016, and as student services coordinator for CET Academic Programs from 2017 to 2021, with a posting in Harbin.

    She holds a bachelor's degree in Asia/China Studies from the University of North Carolina, and she completed a program in Chinese Language and Literature at the Harbin Institute of Technology.

    American Principal at Shanghai Qibao Dwight

    Robert (Robbie) Shields has been American Principal at Qibao Dwight since 2022. He joined Qibao Dwight in 2018, as a member of both the College Counseling team and faculty as a grade 10 Economics teacher and coach of the Boys Basketball team. From 2012 to 2018, Shields served the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, where he launched the Career Services Office at the Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies.

    Previously, Shields had introduced a study abroad and internship program in China for students at the University of Florida, while working in the University’s Warrington College of Business Administration as an academic advisor and career counselor for undergraduates. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida.
