US citizens living and working in China (as well as their employers) could see their China tax liability significantly increase in 2022 for three primary reasons:
1. With effect from January 1, 2022, China will likely end the tax-free status for certain benefits-in-kind which could significantly increase taxes for companies and individuals who will now be subject to taxes on tuition, housing, and other benefits.
2. In addition, the government will change the way that bonuses are treated by including bonuses in an employee's salary.
3. Finally, Shanghai has started requiring companies to pay for their employee's social security contributions.
These changes are expected to have a substantial impact on Chinese taxpayers (including US citizens) and are causing confusion within the business community. To help members gain a better understanding of these new rules, AmCham Shanghai has organized a briefing and panel discussion on the new tax law changes from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on November 29 at the AmCham Shanghai Conference Center. This discussion will be off-the-record.
The seminar will also include informational booths from HR experts.
