The AmCham Shanghai Education Committee invites you to the discussion "Providing Mental Health Support to Stressed-Out Student in the time of COVID" on Oct. 15 from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm at the Chamber's Xintiandi Office.


The session aims to offer a deep dive look at the mental health of students in China. This discussion is particularly important as there has reportedly been a surge in student suicides during this difficult time.


Heidi Mermis-Cava, the Director of Student Support Services at the Shanghai American School, will talk about how SAS and other leading schools are fostering mental well-being for students. Sharon Yen, a clinical psychologist from Shanghai United Family Pudong Hospital will also provide the audience with her rich clinical perspective in working with families and children.

    Director of Student Support Services at Shanghai American School

    Heidi Mermis-Cava is the Director of Student Support Services at Shanghai American School. Heidi was a school psychologist in California public schools and coordinator of various special education programs within her districts for 15 years before moving overseas. Heidi worked in Brazil for seven years as a school psychologist and Director of Student Support Services while also consulting with the U.S. State Department Office of Overseas Schools. Heidi moved to Shanghai in July 2019 and is married and has two children.

    Sharon Yen has 12 years experience of clinical child psychology, including application of play therapy, group therapy and parent support group on children of neurodevelopmental disorders. She is specialized in intervention with children with special needs, including ASD, ADHD, and others who has emotional problems.
