The world and markets in which we operate are becoming more complex and uncertain - and the pace of change keeps accelerating. This makes the job of coaches and leaders very challenging. Business failure has steadily increased over the last few years. Some of this is due to the slowdown in economic activity, but research shows that a high proportion of these failures are due to poor strategic thinking.

We find that many of the traditional approaches to strategy and planning are less useful in these VUCA conditions. Because of the uncertainty, many "best practice" approaches are less useful. We need to find other techniques to cope with the complexity and uncertainty. In addition, the advances in neuroscience and "behavioural economics" have given us powerful new insights into the way the brain functions when thinking, making strategic decisions.

Session Outline

Our two-day program will focus on three key areas to improve your strategic thinking and help you grow your team and organisation:

  1. The mind of the strategist: What have we learned about the brain and the way that effective strategists think?
  2. Insights from behavioural economics: What are key implications strategic implications of the fact that people are predictably irrational?
  3. Building scenarios of the future: How can we plan strategy in a complex and uncertain environment? How can we anticipate key changes and inflection points in our environment?

The overall aim of the program is to upgrade your strategic thinking and allow you to craft effective strategies in complex and uncertain environments. Over the two days, you will learn:

  1. What are the thinking processes of the effective strategist - the mind of the strategist
  2. How your brain functions - what are the 17 critical brain capacities - and how you can improve your brain
  3. Key insights from behavioural economics - what is the impact for setting effective strategy
  4. How to use scenario planning to 'future-proof' your team and organisation - building and using alternative scenarios of the future
  5. Seeing around corners - how to identify major changes in markets and business before they happen.
