In the 21st century technology is growing at breakneck speed, emerging markets are creating business opportunities around the world and automation is adding efficiency while making some staff "redundant." As change is coming faster than ever there are both opportunities and challenges that come with it. The effective leader in these times is one that helps his/her team to navigate the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities in a timely manner.

For PwC this is something that we see in our own organization as well as in the thousands of clients that we service around the world. We all have to find the answer to the questions about how to manage and lead in an ever-changing environment. In our half-day workshop we will explore the stages of preparing for a change and look at the when are where to apply various skills along the change journey to ensure the best possible outcomes.

To make more effective in leading teams through change we will learn:

  • How to be strategic in choosing a change initiative
  • The change process from both a practical and emotional considerations
  • The leadership skills needed and when knowing when to apply them
  • Recognizing the needs of the team as whole as well as individual team members

All PwC learning is taught by lecture, case and experience. In this module taken from the PwC 21st Century Leader series, we bring the content to life through lecture, role plays and case evaluation.

Session Outline

  1. The business case for change: To set the stage we look at the value that a change leader brings to an organization in the current business world. Change is not done just for change sake, but done with short and long-term strategic goals in mind. We explore how choose the right opportunity or threat as we prepare for implementing a change initiative.
  2. Navigating the change curve: While the idea of a "change curve" has been around for decades, we take the understanding to a deeper level. Resistance happens at every step of the way, but the reasons for resistance are different according to the phase of the change as well as the individual. No leader can skip from launching a project directly to high performance, but they can facilitate the process to minimize the time and negative impacts of the process.
  3. Case study: We look at a case to learn both the signs of where the team and individuals are, what needs they have in their current phase of the change initiative and what skills the leader would need to apply to get the best possible results.
  4. Coaching role plays: To make the learning as relevant as possible to the real world, we simulate coaching sessions where the leaders need to explore the real needs and apply the relevant learning within a short amount of time. Participating, observing and receiving feedback make the learning real and ready to be used in the workplace.
  5. Summary: the session is wrapped up with a summary of learning and the participants identifying specific workplace opportunities where they can apply their change leadership.

    Erik Barnes has been working in the people development industry in the greater China area for twelve years. His work includes corporate work, external consulting and program design. He is an experienced facilitator and trainer for a variety of management and communication skills. Erik has a big passion for his work, whether in the classroom or one-to-one coaching, and enjoys watching those he works with grow and learn.

    His projects have included individual coaching, classroom training, experiential activities and long-term change management implementation. He has traveled to Europe, the U.S. as well as around Asia to deliver trainings, develop content and train other trainers. Erik has created custom programs for his clients in a variety of topics including collaboration, innovation and coaching skills.

    Erik’s work experience includes sales manager, international trade and program manager for a large IT company. He has worked in and with both small companies and large multinationals. Recent clients include Microsoft, Unilever, SanDisk, Decathlon and others. He brings a rich knowledge of business and cross-culture experience to the classroom.

*What is Training Credit?
