AmCham Shanghai is pleased to invite you to the launch of our latest Viewpoint, Chasing Innovation: R&D Barriers and Incentives in China, on April 19, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at AmCham Shanghai Conference Center. Based on a survey of 52-member companies with R&D facilities and in-depth interviews with nearly 15 member companies, the report examines the R&D environment in China and provides recommendations on how the government can better support foreign R&D.

The report's authors will provide the key takeaways and recommendations from the report. Following the presentation, there will be an expert panel that includes Reggie Lai (TE Connectivity, Vice President and General Manager China), and Dr. Yin Peng (Abbott, Head of China R&D). They will provide members with insights on:

    Reggie Lai

    Vice President, General Manager China at TE Connectivity

    Reggie Lai joined TE Connectivity (“TE”) in May 2012 and currently serves as Vice President and General Manager China. Lai co-chairs TE’s China Business Council and represents the company on significant matters to both the Chinese government and broader business community in China. In addition, Lai leads the company’s government affairs and corporate responsibility efforts in Asia.

    Lai has over twenty years of professional experience in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Wales. Lai joined TE from APCO Worldwide, where he advised multinational companies on matters of public affairs, policy advocacy and market entries. Lai also served for the Welsh Assembly Government and ALSTOM in the earlier part of his career.

    Lai is a board director of the US Information Technology Organization. Lai also serves as vice chair of American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai’s Suzhou Chapter and was the founding chair of the chamber’s Government Affairs Committee.

    Lai holds a bachelor’s degree of Thermodynamics from Tongji University in Shanghai and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Durham in England.

    Dr. Peng Yin has been with Abbott for 14 years since 2004. Currently, Dr. Yin is the Head of Abbott Diagnostics China R&D Center in Shanghai since 2014. Prior to his current role, he was the Global Scientific and Medical Affairs Director, Abbott Diagnostics in Chicago. Prior to joining Abbott, Dr. Yin worked as a Senior Scientist at Zycos in Lixington, MA for four years; and practiced as an Abdominal Surgeon for 5 years in Tianjin, China.

    Dr. Yin currently is a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FACB); previous chair of Industry Division, AACC; Executive Committee Member of the Emerging Technology Division, IFCC, previous Congresses and the Conference Executive Committee Member, IFCC; as well as the Member of Biological Diagnostic Technology, Branch of China Medicinal Biotechnology Association; Committee Member of China Diagnostic New Technology and New Material Biomarker Group; the honorary professor of Tianjin Medical University Cardiovascular Institute and TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital in China. He is also on the editorial board of both Journal of Human Virology & Retro Virology and Journal of Virology & Current Research. He has published many high quality scientific research papers in the world’s leading science journals such as Cell, Nature, and Journal of Virology.

    Dr. Peng Yin earned his Medical Doctor Degree (M.D.) from Tianjin Medical School in China in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology from University of Manitoba in Canada in 1998. He also completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard University Medical School in 2000.
