Event Details

The Leaders of China and the United States have espoused deeply nationalistic visions — the "China Dream" of Xi Jinping and “Make America Great Again” of Donald Trump. Yet inherent in both Dreams are profound contradictions — unbalanced economic growth in China and low and falling domestic saving in the United States. China stands a better chance of resolving its principal contradiction through a services- and consumer-led rebalancing strategy. The United States, by contrast, remains steeped in denial — embracing a strategy that will expand its budget deficit, which in turn will lead to a further compression of domestic saving and a widening of its current-account and trade deficit. Inherent in this asymmetry are mounting trade frictions, the distinct possibility of a trade war, and ominous implications for both economies, as well as for the broader global economy. Is there a way out?
