China's reopening after three years of zero COVID policy is set to restore growth optimism among businesses. As travel resumes and sales bounce back, businesses are expecting a brighter outlook this year. To add to this momentum, the Chinese government has also signaled its renewed focus on economic growth. In the post-COVID reality, how could businesses capture emerging opportunities in China while navigating the Chinese unique business environment? To provide members with insight on doing business in China in 2023, AmCham Shanghai and the United States Heartland China Association (USHCA) are co-organizing a webinar with China-based executives on how to succeed in China's new business environment. The webinar includes a panel discussion with Eddy Chan (Fedex China President), Selena Chu (Dow China Vice President), Diane Long (Managing Director of Xanadu Enterprise Shanghai), and Sean Stein (AmCham Shanghai Chair and Senior Advisor at Covington & Burling).

    Head of China and Senior Vice President at FedEx Express

    As Head of China and Senior Vice President of FedEx Express, Eddy Chan oversees the many operations of FedEx Express in this rapidly growing and increasingly vital market. Mr. Chan is responsible for the overall tactical planning and administration of the strategically important China region, headquartered in the booming city of Shanghai. The ever-changing dynamics of this market demand strong leadership familiar with the intricacies of the region.

    Since joining FedEx as an Account Executive in Hong Kong in 1985, Mr. Chan has developed an impressive breadth of experience from his roles in many divisions. After being promoted to station manager in Hong Kong, Mr. Chan moved into sales. He started out as a District Sales Manager in Hong Kong, and eventually became Managing Director of Sales for the Mid-Pacific region. After moving back into operations, serving as Managing Director of Operations for FedEx Taiwan, Mr. Chan became Vice President and General Manager of China and later Regional Vice President and General Manager of China and Taiwan, eventually adding the whole mid-Pacific region to his domain.

    Mr. Chan’s commitment to international economic development in China has been rewarded with numerous honors. He serves as a consultant to the Shanghai World Trade Organization Consultation Center and the China Maritime Arbitration Commission. He has acted as a visiting professor at the University of International Business and Economy, an International Senior Economic Consultant of the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province and a Logistics Consultant to the Tian Jin Municipality Communication Commission. In addition, he has served as Vice Chairman of the 2018 AmCham Shanghai Board of Governors, Vice President of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, and Vice Chair of Shanghai Express Industry Association. He is also a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong. In 2011, Mr. Chan received the “Magnolia Award” from the Shanghai Municipal Government. In 2014, Mr. Chan received the “2014 CSR Innovator” award from CBN Weekly.

    A Hong Kong citizen, Mr. Chan received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Hong Kong. He also holds an Executive MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in conjunction with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

    Vice President at Dow

    Selena Chu is currently the Vice President for Dow Greater China. She provides leadership and general management of Greater China, Dow’s largest international market - oversight of country strategy, sites management, and people & culture development. Based in Shanghai, China, she also serves as CIO for Dow Asia Pacific to drive digital solution development and implementation, covering areas of Digital Acceleration, Enterprise Service, and Information Security. She also partners with businesses and functions to enable regional business strategies.

    Selena has over 20 years of consulting and industry experience covering various leadership roles including R&D Operation, Business/Innovation Strategy, Technical Information Service, and Digitization. Prior to joining Dow in 2008, she worked for GE (General Electric), KPMG Consulting Co, with working assignment in the US.

    Selena holds a master’s degree of Computer Science, and bachelor’s degree of Industrial Design, both from Zhejiang University. She was recently listed as “Top 50 Women in Tech 2021” by Forbes China, and “Top 50 Future MPW 2021” by Fortune China.

    Executive Director of US Heartland China Association

    Min Fan was born in China and studied at Peking University before immigrating to the United States. Continuing her education at the University of North Carolina she earned a B.A. in Art followed by an M.B.A. at the Kenan-Flagler Business School.

    Min went on to a successful career in the corporate world culminating in her role as the leader of the Ideation and Innovation Practice at Hewlett Packard (HP) Global Corporate Services. Upon leaving HP she joined the startup ecosystem as an entrepreneur and mentor at two Colorado incubators.

    From 2018-2019, Min brought her entrepreneur experience and passion for US and China collaboration to the nonprofit sector as the Executive Director/COO of US China Innovation Alliance (UCIA). Over 100 US companies visited China on sponsored trips as a result of her team’s efforts.

    Prior to joining the US Heartland China Association, Min launched US China Now, a not-for-profit endeavor, which partnered with a broad spectrum of organizations to build a bridge of understanding across the cultural divide between US and China.

    For over three decades, Diane has actively participated in China’s march to modernization as a corporate executive, entrepreneur, consultant, mentor, and serial social entrepreneur giving her a ringside seat to the greatest economic and social change in one country in history.

    Diane spent 25 years in the manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics area with such companies as Liz Claiborne, a U.S. apparel brand that was one of the first to establish sourcing operations in China, as well as Adidas, the global sports brand, to name a few. For the past 10 years as Managing Director at Xanadu Enterprise, a bilingual, bicultural boutique consultancy, she has worked with various firms applying her multi-faceted experience to assist both first-to-market, as well as established organizations, building for success in China. She focuses on strategic planning, market insights, talent development, and operations execution for a wide range of industries and specialties.

    Throughout she has worked tirelessly to be a bridge between cultures, industries, and people through her dynamic leadership in the non-profit arena. Diane was an early leader in the American Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (Amcham) including as Chairman of the Board. Appreciating the power of sport for health and teamwork, she co-founded Active Kidz Shanghai (AKS), the first of its kind, a not-for-profit organization providing team sports opportunities for youth. Her love of children extended to the health care and education environments, she a founder and current director, of Mingxing Caritas (MXC), a volunteer-run charity that funds medical needs and education for impoverished children and families. Supporting women’s professional development, she co-founded the International Professional Women’s Society which will celebrate 30 years of providing network and empowerment opportunities for women from all walks of life. Diane is a past board trustee for Concordia International School Shanghai and the first chairman of the board for the Community Center Shanghai (CCS).

    Diane is a graduate of Stanford University. The mother of four boys, she can still be found on Saturdays on the sidelines of soccer games.

    Mark Louis is a highly accomplished professional with extensive experience in the field of Industrial Automation. He is the Director and General Manager of Douglas Machine China operations, and is also responsible for APAC, India and MENA markets. He is known for his innovative and strategic support approach to business and his ability to build strong relationships with clients and partners. He is a strong advocate for automation and is passionate about using technology to drive efficiency.

    He joined Douglas Machine in 2021 to setup and establish operations in China for the purpose of co-manufacturing and sale of packaging machines for China and export markets. As a director he is responsible for driving sales growth and leading the company’s efforts in the various international markets. Under his leadership, Douglas Machine has experienced significant growth and expansion into new markets.

    Mark began his career with SMC Corporation a global leader in pneumatic technology, headquartered in Tokyo Japan, in 2013 he was reassigned from the Noblesville Indiana headquarters to work at the Shanghai operations and support American clients with operations in China.

    Mark holds a degree in Fluid Power Technology from the University of Minnesota Hennepin Tech. and member of several professional organizations, including AmCham Shanghai, AmCham South China, the Institute of Packaging Professionals and National Fluid Power Association. He currently resides in Huizhou China Guangdong province.

    AmCham Shanghai Chair and Senior Advisor at Covington & Burling

    Sean Stein is a senior advisor in Covington’s Public Policy Practice Group. Prior to joining Covington, Sean served as the U.S. Consul General in Shanghai. He has over twenty years of diplomatic experience in Asia and has served in leadership positions in China, Washington, and the region. His insights informed policy making at the highest levels in Washington and he assisted dozens of U.S., Chinese, and international firms to develop strategies, manage risk, and identify opportunities for growth in response to the changing U.S.-China relationship.

    Sean, a non-lawyer, is a key resource to businesses on issues related to political risk, public affairs, problem solving, and communications. He regularly assists companies facing acute or long-term issues to resolve them, often through discussions with U.S. and Chinese government officials. He is well placed to provide strategic advice to U.S. and international clients on issues relating to securing market access and protecting investments in China, assessing risk, navigating trade controls, sanctions, and supply chain restrictions, and resolving disputes and regulatory investigations.

    Eric Zheng became the President of AmCham Shanghai in 2022. He has been involved in the Chamber for over 15 years as a member, committee leader, Board member, Board treasurer, Board secretary, and Board vice chair, and Board chair (2018 and 2019).
    Eric brings a unique combination of private and public sector experiences to the presidency. He worked in management consulting with PwC in the U.S. and later served for the U.S. Department of Commerce as the principal commercial officer at the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou. Eric had a long career with AIG in Greater China and held a series of positions that culminated in his service as CEO of AIG China. He then chaired the board of Heng An Standard Life Insurance Company.
    In volunteer roles, Eric serves as the Greater China regional chair of the Committee of 100 and as a board director of Shanghai Make-A-Wish Charity Foundation. The Shanghai municipal government has granted Eric its Magnolia Gold Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the city. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Fudan University and an MBA from Georgetown University.
